Cyclocross - Shimano 7801 levers with XTR Side Pull Breaks (compatible)?

I don't see why these wouldn't be compatible. I brought the box of parts into my bike shop today and I was told that the STI levers may not be able to pull enough on the XTR Brakes. They said they would try. Basically I'm trying to save money by using my old road parts on my new Tricross. The levers on my mountain bike don't seem to pull any "more" than my STI levers.

Second Question: If I can't use my XTR side pull brakes. What brakes would you recommend that are fairly cheap?

On a side note. This bike is going to be used for general purpose all-around biking. It will never be raced.

If you mean road levers with V-brakes, then no, they are not compatible. You can make them work with an adapter called a "travel agent" This will run you $20-$30 dollars
