Southern California - One of the worst parts about riding in Malibu

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
So this happens earlier today somewhere between Topanga Canyon Road and Temescal. I'm heading toward Santa Monica and it's already early afternoon so the traffic is picking up. I'm riding in a narrow lane between the parked cars on the right and the cars in the right lane zipping by. About 100 ft in front of me an early 30s guy suddenly opens his door fully open (basically almost into the right lane). Fortunately there wasn't a car in the right lane that was very close to me so I was able to get around.
Here's where it gets interesting. I instinctively say "hey man, you need to be more careful", to which he yells back at me, "F*** YOU!, YOU BETTER WATCH OUT F***ER!"
I love LA.

It's not just in Malibu. Idiots procreate at a much faster rate than intelligent people.

Happens on PCH in Newport, Laguna, Corona del Mar, Huntington (worst...stoner surfers stick their boards between parked cars before trying to jaywalk North of the Pier). I end up actually riding in the middle of the rightmost traffic lane, constantly looking behind when there's two lanes...safer than dealing with idiots opening their doors and although I'm yelled at by some drivers, at least I'm visible.
Never had a cop do anything other tell me I was doing right.
Time will tell.

HA! Had to be Malibu. You can ride down Figueroa in Highland Park, or through Pico Rivera, or Santa Ana and nobody will hassle you. Ride down PCH in Corona Del Mar, or through Brentwood, and some "tough guy" in a car will want to fight you.

This afternoon I was told I "should be laying in the dirt" by a guy who didn't like the way I slipped between two lanes at a red light before turning left. Location: Woodland Hills

I admit that I'm biased when it comes to Brentwood...
Something about OJ, Christopher Thompson, people I've known from there and some unfriendly honking while biking...

I tend to avoid PCH in Malibu. If I do go to places like this, I go with someone else.

People are so careless and are NEVER wrong........ I noticed that's an LA thing. I am from the Chicago area and I say 'please, thank you, sorry, let me get that for you' and hold doors for people.... and I get funny looks or people I know are like 'why are you so nice to strangers?' and I say 'because I'm not from around here......'
oh... and my co-worker from NY..... hes the first person to tell someone to F off LOL!

I'm from New York and live in Chicago. Never noticed a difference.
All I can say is... if you are expecting the other guy to look out for you, make sure you paid your insurance payment this month.
