Maybe now, when I try adding to the Everclear entry (for the alcoholic "beverage", that is) that it works very well as a freeze-resistant lubricant for trumpet and tuba valves, it'll stay up rather than get edited out.

I haven't been able to find Everclear at any of the local liquor stores around here. Where do you find this stuff?

The last time I tried to find it, I was in Salt Lake City in February 2002. I knew that there was a liquor store (can't just buy it at any gas station in Mormon country ;) ), but lost track of where it was. So, I left the hotel and started walking, and happened upon a couple college-age kids. I thought, "Hmm -- if anyone knows where the booze is, it's kids like these." So, I asked, and they gave me quick n' easy directions.
I got to the shop, looked on every shelf, and didn't find it. I looked again, making sure to peruse every square inch of shelf space, and still couldn't find it. I gave up trying to find it myself and asked the old guy at the checkout lane -- "Excuse me, but do you have Everclear here?"
He reached under the counter, lifted up a bottle of gen-yoo-ine 198 proof starter fluid, and set it in front of me. "$8.50," he said.
Awesome. I paid, feeling the need to explain myself -- "I'm not actually going to drink it, I'm going to make valve oil out of it. We're playing at the Winter Paralympics and we're having trouble with our instruments freezing." I think he actually believed me, saying that he'd heard of musicians using it for the same reason.
Took it back to the hotel, mixed it 2 parts Everclear to 1 part Al Cass, shook it up, and used it the next day. My horn's valves didn't freeze, just like they never froze at homecoming football games in college where we'd sit on our hands for a whole quarter 'cuz our team sucked. :lol:

I believe BevMo has it, but it's not the real deal. Pretty sure CA has laws forbidding anything over 151 proof or something like that. Real Everclear is 190 (I think). Stuff is frightening.

My parents actually gave me a bottle of the stuff as a teenager. I didnt drink until college (other than the very occasional beer at family parties), and I played Trombone/Euphonium in marching band when i wasnt on the drum major podium (yes, i was/am a dork though I dont play anymore). Dad would occasionally ask to see the bottle, and he'd open it to smell and make sure the contents werent water. I grew up in Michigan where even October got darn cold. I did try a sip once, but the taste and feeling told me my 120 lb 6'1" frame would be destroyed by anything more than that, so I was never tempted to drink more than that.

Right (including the 190 proof; I think my "198" was an exaggeration). Since alcohol laws vary by state, full-bore Everclear isn't available everywhere.
The good stuff works great as a short-term valve lubricant because it's almost pure alcohol with no flavors, fillers, or extra stuff that can gunk up. Mixed with regular valve oil, it thickens a bit and sticks to the valve casings better.

I'm not sure about CA laws. I think I can find stuff a bit over 151 here, but only a bit.
Anything over 190 is suspect. My kid brother was biochem and it turns out distilling has limits. 95% is as high as you can go, above that the water is driven off by adding nasty stuff. Most of the nasty stuff is gone also, but traces remain.
I'm not sure about CA laws. I think I can find stuff a bit over 151 here, but only a bit.

For months the Wiki entry on Eddy Merckx said that in 1969 he would have won the white jersey for best young rider if it had existed in the TDF. One can argue this is technically true. But the omission was still huge. He did win the white jersey in 1969, which at that time was the combo jersey. He won 4 such in total, more than any other rider. (He would have won 6 if it had existed for all the TDFs he rode).
