Recumbent - Am I the only girl who rides a recumbent?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I have never only seen one girl on recumbent, but I never thought about it until now...

Yes, you are the only one (if you are a girl). However, maybe another girl will want to try it if she sees you riding yours. So be alert to that possibility, okay?

Both of the organized rides I've attended (a Critical Mass I went to in Albany and a local family ride) had women riding recumbents. One was on a Rans LWB and one was on a Bike E.

I've seen lots of women on recumbents. Want to learn about more of them contact the Hostel Shoppe in Stevens Point, Wisconsin. Talk to Jessie Bostic, one of the sales people there. She would be glad to talk with you about women on recumbents.

Have seen girls/females riding 'bents, trikes, tandems and unicycles . . .
Maybe you should get out more often?!

I've been riding my recumbent trike since '06. Last year as I had a cycle race go past me in the opposite direction, there were 4 'bent bikes participating and two of the riders were female. So, nope. Not the only one. :thumb:

Ditto. The Midwest Recumbent Rally held in Stevens Point, WI every year is highly populated with women. check out the picture galleries from previous years.

One of the requirements for riding a bent is a beard, which limits all but a small segment of the female population...and all Italian women, like my sisters. :D

Well, there is that, too. :D

There's not a lot of females that ride bikes at all, in my area. Maybe 2% are women. Then figure that recumbents are much less than 1% of all bikes....

I know of two local people with bents; one is female.
-----
I've noticed that a lot of people who have tried mine (male and female) seemed embarassed to be seen riding it. So for some people it takes a bit more courage than a normal bike.

I think cycling in general is something like 2:1 or 3:1 men:women anyway, and women are an even smaller percentage of recumbent riders; but they're out there. There's at least a dozen women 'bent riders in my club.

The MS150 "Escape To The Lake" ride this weekend there was a woman riding a catrike. Not sure of the model but it did look comfortable and fun.

I've ridden three different types of recumbent. And if you go to the PBP there are several women who ride them there.

If I met a recumbent riding girl, I would definitely ask for her number! :)

I did the opposite. I got her number, started dating. I got a recumbent and let her try it out, and then I had to get her one, too. After riding together for a couple years, we got married.

Our 17th anniversary is coming up in July- we'll be starting out on TourBC (http://tourbc.net/) just then.

There's a fair number of female 'bent riders in the Portland area- but that probably reflects that there's gazillions of cyclists of all types. The Easy Rider Recumbent Club (http://www.geocities.com/e_r_r_c/) magazine is put out by the mother & daughter team of Connie McAyeal and Laurie Smith. Coventry Cycles was recently bought by Marilyn Hayward, which may make it the only female-owned, recumbent-specializing bike shop in the U.S.

I know PLENTY. Including several incredile athletes like Tonya Markham and Sara Kay. Bent participation vaies from state to state, more in the midwest than anywhere. What state are you in? We might be able to push you to a club.

Went to a church event and one of the ladies asked to try my RANS Stratus...I forgot to push the seat forward a little for her, she still liked the feel of it. I am hoping to convince more people that I am not "laying down" on my recumbent.

When I'm out riding rail trails and MUPs, I've encountered a few women riding bents. I'd say that about 25% of the people I've seen on bents have been women.

My wife is the stoker on our EZ Tandem, and pilots her own Sun X-1. My daughter has rides my EZ Sport when she visits. I see several women on 'bents around town.

You're in good company.

You just don't realize how many 'bent riders are women, because of the fake beards. Tradition, y'know.

Come to think of it, most of the recumbent riders I know (myself included) are engineers or physicists, fields that still have a significant gender gap...as that gap closes, maybe more women will be inspired to tale up the Geek's Bike of Choice.

Having said that, the only one of my immediate co-workers who rides a 'bent is a woman (and an engineer, reinforcing that trend.) And of course, since I live not far from the Easy Racers headquarters, I'd better mention Tanya Markham, who has been setting a string of human-powered speed records in the tradition of her dad, Fast Freddy Markham.

Bike riding seems to be a guy thing mostly but that doesn't mean girls arn't cool on a recumbent. The girls (2) in this video are having a good time. www.vimeo.com/4235640 (http://www.vimeo.com/4235640) It is high def so you need a good connection to view it. You might miss the first girl. Second one is near the end.

She cares litle whether it's cool or not, as long as her butt is comfortable, she's happier than being on a regular bike.

Male benters have beards, aerobellies and wire rim glasses.

Female benters? Never actually seen one, but, if I had to make up a stereotype, I'd go with crew cut wearing bulldyke.

So, uhhh, no, sorry, you'll have to loose the pony tail if you wanna ride a bent.

So, you're a dude then? Yeah, the ponytail is acceptable, preferably with the beard. How 'bout technical degrees?

If you're a chick with a burly stache, well, I guess you don't really need the crew cut, do ya.

The wife and I spied a female 'benter today. She was middle aged (30'ish), shoulder length strawberry blond hair riding a bright red "Bike-E". It's the first time I've seen that bike in the neighborhood. It was a fine looking little red bike.

Hey trekker pete, since you like stereotypes so much I am guessing you drive a really big truck.

Is that seriously what people here think of recumbents? IMO they are the most fun to be had on 2 wheels, aside from motorcycle sex.

I don't assume all brightly coloured spandex wearers who like tiny bike seats shoved up their asses are gay, so why would you assume because I ride a recumbent I must be a bull ****? Scary world.

Trekker Pete doesn't seem to be a troll. I'd just chalk it up to an attempted joke that didn't get received well. To chime in, there are quite a few women recumbent riders in my club. They range in age from 30-ish to in their 60s. The majority ride EasyRacers of one model or another, with a scattering of other brands.
