While I am far from a racer, I do exert maximum effort on my rides, especially on the days when I do hills. On a few occasions, about once every three times or so, on the way back, my legs are so sluggish I literally have to get off and walk the last climb. It usually takes about 10 minutes of walking, and when I re-mount near the top or at the top, I am fine for the rest of the way home, about 5 miles.
This is, apparently, due to a build up of lactic acid. Is there a way to hasten a return to normal or to lessen the build up? Is it just more training on the hills?

what's your cadence like? Higher cadence generally has the effect of cleaning out your legs.

Are you not recovered from previous rides? Do you do recovery rides?

I think once your legs are full of lactic acid it's too late.
Spinning is good. Also, some sports drinks include agents purportedly to buffer lactic acid. Is it hype or help? I believe I do better in the hills when I have a bottle of Cytomax.
More hills, longer rides, gradually increase your fitness and endurance.
