I recently bought a Univega Trail hybrid through Craigslist. I knew it needed a tuneup, so I called Cycle Fitness. They let me know that they could work on it after Memorial Day weekend. I brought it in then, after riding the bike for about a week. In that time, the shifter controlling the front derailleur had gone a bit wonky. Some cable was peeking out of the shifter's housing, and I couldn't get the chain to move up to the 2nd or 3rd ring. I pointed this out when my repair ticket was being written up.

I got the call that my bike was ready - on time. I picked it up, and in the next few days rode it about 20 miles, before the shifter started giving me trouble. I rode it to the shop on Saturday morning, where the staff informed me that the shifter was broken. They had a compatible part in stock and, while I crossed the street and had lunch, installed the new one. In and out: 30 minutes, $20. I don't believe I was charged for labor, as the sad state of the original shifter could've been caught during the tuneup, and replacement recommended.

If I had this problem a year ago, I might have gone to Rad Rob's in Shelton, or World of Wheels in Newtown. Both of those stores have since closed. When nearby competitors close their doors, the remaining shop might be tempted to raise prices or otherwise subject displaced clientele to shabby treatment. I'm glad that hasn't been the case in Monroe. :D

This perfectly illustrates why it's important to build a relationship with a local shop, if they take care of their customers.

As far as I remember, both shops that have since closed were around for quite a long time. Being profitable in the bike biz is difficult even during good economic times. Glad that there is a reliable shop still left.
