In a previous thread about snacking someone mentioned protein shakes. I am thinking of introducing them into my diet and wanted to know if anyone had any good recipes for me.
Also, are certain brands of whey protein better than others? I know there are tons of brands out there, for a range of prices. I thought that before I buy some I would ask you if there are certain brands that absorb into the body better than others. If not should I just go with the cheapest? I truly believe that a lot of the time you get what you pay for but, I also don't want to pay $25.00 for something that I can get for $10.00 or whatever.

This brand is pretty good and cheap locally i get 5 pounds for 30.00 go to your local muscle shop for it.
I use Kashi Go Lean protein powder. I just throw it into a blender with a little soy milk, frozen berries, and maybe a banana. Makes a great meal replacement/recovery drink.
Whey is the only one I've seen that doesn't horribly clump up. You can literally stir it in and it'll mix.

It tastes good mixed with water or skim milk and at $19.99 + $5.95 shipping for 5 lbs it's the lowest priced protein powder I've found. The service is also great; I usually receive it 3 days after placing the order.

I'm gonna throw my vote into ON's corner also (optimum nutrition). It's a good whey blend, doesn't taste like *** (get the vanilla or strawberry) and also includes bcaa's. 5 lbs for $30 is average price, you might be able to get 5 lbs for $25 if you do some shopping. Best recipe is to mix 6 oz's of water with 1 scoop, throw in a banana and some pre-cooked oatmeal, 5 or 6 cubes of ice and serve, makes about 25 - 30 oz worth ... just mix it up by using different fruits otherwise the taste gets old.
A trick I've found is to just pour a few scoops into one of those small plastic chocolate milk bottles, pour in 10 ounces of skim milk, and shake for 30 seconds. Quick and hassle free.
I get my whey protein at CostCo for around $25 for 6 (yes, six) lbs.
The problem I've always had was the taste. Most of them made me puke. Then I found Go Lean at Trader Joe's. It tasted good, but it was soy protein, not whey. Now I go with the Costco whey protein. It tastes great and it's cheap. As for recipe, add a teaspoon of Carnation malt with milk. It comes close to a real ice cream shake.

I use myoplex and myoplex lite after my rides. if it was a hard one, i will use the regular stuff; it it was a lighter day or late at night, i use the lite stuff. the products are made by eas (experimentally applied science--i think). the reason i like it is because it contains stuff other than proteins in it that help your body. the only big difference really between the lite and the regular is the amount of protein they have in them and the number of calories. they are meal replacements, but i use them as recovery drinks. they have made a difference to me when i wake up the next day and don't feel as sore is i do when i forget to take them after riding hard. i am not an expert, but it works for me, and tastes allright to me.
I have a fruit shake for breakfast. I put in 1-2 cups of soy milk, then a 1/2 - 1 scoop of protein powder, 1 tsp of flax or hemp oil, a banana, some fresh strawberries (they're in season right now) and frozen mixed berries.

I get milk powder cause it's cheap and it works.
But they have a number of different kinds of whey.
Egg is a good protein powder, but the good ones are
expensive. I'm not a big fan of whey.

The secret to making protein shakes is a cheap electric hand blender. The kind that will fit inside the glass. NO MORE CLUMPS. Easy to clean as well, just rinse off in the sink.
A great drink is 12 oz of orange juice and a scoop of the protein powder. It provides just about the perfect ratio of carb/protein for a recovery drink. (I drink it for breakfast too!)
I don't know if it's good for me or not but it tastes good:
Two scoops butter pecan ice cream
One cup skim milk
one scoop chocolate flavored protein powder
mix it up in a malt mixer. yummy!

so far I have not found a cheaper source of powder then i can get locally.
3 scoops natural strawberry ice cream
1 cup skim milk
1/2 cup black coffee from this morning
1 scoop chocolate protein powder
I think they are getting unhealthier the more I experiment!

I think I'll open a malt shop.
I got some "100% Whey Protein" at GNC, but noticed that is has 70 mg of cholesterol to 20 grams of protein (one serving). Seems a bit high for us folks watching our cholesterol intake. What is the cholesterol/protein ratio for your whey?
I've been using soy protein powder which claims to be heart healthy. It has 14g soy protein and has no listing for cholesterol so I guess there isn't any. I didn't take note of the exact number but the sodium was, I think, in the 100mg range.
that is not a lot of cholesterol. I don't think this is a problem you need to worry about. But... if you do... you could use milk protein which has even less. Or you could add soy protein, which shouldn't have any. Or both, which is what I do.

Have a protein drink in the morning and before you go to bed, you're body will be lacking protein intake all night long so the one before bed will help, and in the morning, you'll need some more. I have Optimum and it's good. I throw some glutamine in there once in awhile. As for flavors, the chocolate is good but I can't drink it with water, it's nasty.
