Triathlon - quad cramps

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I had severe quad craps in both legs about 5 min. into my run-leg yesterday. Both quads locked up and I almost stopped to try to stretch them out. Another runner advised me to work through it, and they finally let up a few minutes later. Today they are extremely soar.
Anyone have some theories how I could prevent this in the future? Would a different bike geometry help? It was a very hilly bike course. Would potassium or any other nutrition help?

I have the same problem. Normally for me it's about the last mile or so. I feel like my quad muscles are going to explode out of my skin. But I stop and start a lot on the run.
My guess is since I'm on a road bicycle and not triathlon bike that I'm using my quad muscles more than I would on a tri-bike. I also put more effort into my road cycling since it's my strong point in a triathlon. I shouldn't knowing it'll hurt me in the run but after my sucky swim I can't stop myself from hauling ass on the bike ride.

One possible solution is to massage your legs more. I find as I increase the amount of running I do, my legs turn into a tight mess and some muscles are highly resistant to the concept of relaxing. Since I don't have a live-in masseuse, I use a foam roller (http://www.amazon.com/GoFit-6-Inch-18-Inch-Roller-Performance/dp/B0007W2FEU/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&s=sporting-goods&qid=1245030417&sr=8-5).
