Bicycle Mechanics - What happened to my tire?
Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
I took my brand new road bike out for a ride on Sunday and while descending a hill at 38.5 mph, I hit a pot hole (not a huge one) in the asphalt. The CF fork soaked it up pretty well and my front wheel/tire was fine but the back tire immediately lost all pressure. The bike started to fish tail and I'm glad I didn't wipe out. The wheel looks fine, no broken spokes, and no obvious punctures in the rubber. When I returned home, I started to re-inflate the tire with a floor pump and it looks like it was taking the air. Should I remove the wheel and do a more thorough inspection of the wheel and the tube?

Yes. I'd rather take 10-15 minutes and check everything rather than leaving it be and going 40mph again.

ya it lost air it will lose it again. it is sealed by the tire casing.
pull tube out 100%,
and inflate it by itself and check for leaks

Sounds like you might have gotten a pinch flat.
Take out your tube and inflate it (you can use a bathtub of cold water for a 'bubble test') to look for holes. If you find a hole, patch it or replace. Then in the future make sure you keep your road bike tires inflated over 100psi.

Next time you ride take a spare tube and an inflator, so you dont have to wait till you get home before you can ride again. Check that the rim sidewalls are still an even distance apart.
