It's definitely a nice place, I was there yesterday at the beach, and have camped there many times. March is a good time of year in FL as well.

Drew, just signed up and also signed my 14 year old son up. He just rode his first group ride this weekend, but only 18 miles. We are planning on doing the 62 mile ride, so he has lots of training to do. My father in law will also be signing up soon. That is 3 more riders and we are looking forward to this ride. I checked out the 62 mile course and it looks like it will be a very nice route along the Gulf.

Going to talk to a friend of mine and see if we can make it down from SC to do this. The routes look killer.

GREAT!!! :thumb: Thanks Just want to make sure that you were looking at the right one.
http://www.mapmyride.com/route/us/florida/tierra+verde/755125661460336374 is the most current version of the metric route. Had to do some minor tweaking for safety reasons after doing the route real time. Dawn from the ADA here in Tampa is going through the town by town approval process this week. Will respost the entire event once she's got the final approvals in place, and I don't have to tweak the routes any more.

Bring friends :thumb: Check with Dawn at the Tampa ADA office, they may still have some hook-ups for camping or places to stay resonably. She can be contacted via email at dkeglor 'at' diabetes.org or phone at 813-885-5007 ext 3020.

I'm moving to Tampa the weekend before this event, but I don't think I'll be able to make the ride... Hopefully I can in 2011. I might look into working as a volunteer there this year.

Jersh,
Like any charity event, the need for volunteers will far exceed the number available. If you're up to it so soon after your migration to the Tampabay area, you've more than welcome. Drop me a PM if you want more info on that.

Drew,

Do you have the current route for the Metric century and century? I would like to take a look. I will be riding a metric century here in Bartow, Fl on Sat 03/06 and then will ride the metric century route of the Tour de Cure. I look forward to seeing you again this year. I am bring 3 new riders (my 14 year old son, Father in law and co-worker) to the event this year.

The various local police departments along the coast weren't all that willing to let us ride through their communities. Dawn finally got at least the lower half allowed along the coast. While I've not yet had a chance to get the rest stops identified and finalized here's the major routes that extend outside Ft DeSoto Park:
35 Mile - http://tour.diabetes.org/site/DocServer/35_Mile_Route_12-30-09.pdf?docID=37121

Metric - http://tour.diabetes.org/site/DocServer/Metric_Century-Final_12-30-09.pdf?docID=37141

Century - http://tour.diabetes.org/site/DocServer/Full_Route-Final_12-30-09.pdf?docID=37101
Obvously two of the stop areas on the Century will be the 35 and 62 mile rides turn around points, I've got one at the 5 mile out which is the 10 mile ride turn point, but I've still got to find a couple of more in those voids between.

I've been planning on attending this ride but I've got to admit I'm not all that comfortable with the century route.
IMHO, it looks like there's a lot of riding on high traffic roads (in an area not known for driver proficiency).

Can't beat where it begins and ends though........

As the route planner, I tried, and must say I was of the same opinion. We had a route proposed that I felt was considerably safer, but the Pinellas County Police that had to approve the route thought that with Spring Break going on we could not travel through Clearwater on bicycles safely and counterd with a version of thse routes posted that went up to Tarpon Springs on US19. I deleted the worst of it and added the mileage on the southern end.
For next year, they're looking at the dates a bit closer and going to ensure that the TdC is not in conflict with other major traffic events and take it more along the coast rather than further inland.

looking forward to the ride. I hope the weather is going to be good.

While the TdC over in Orlando (Lake Nona) this past weekend was a bit chilly and very windy, the weatherman is proimissing almost perfect riding weather with a high of 69, clear skies, and light winds at 8MPH. Granted weather is abotu the most volatile thing in a costal area, but everyone here is hoping they be a bit more accurate than usual.
