I've got a San Jose that I've been using on the street lately, but am contemplating throwing some wide cross tires on to hit the dirt. (my issue of concern is that I'm in New Mexico now, so I'd imagine the wider the better to deal with the dry lose dirt/sand conditions.... please correct me if I'm wrong!)

Anybody know from experience the widest tires that can be mounted (rear and/or front) on a Bianchi San Jose?

and any good suggestions for very wide cx tires?

I wouldnt think youd need to go higher than 35c, those are pretty damn big already for a CX bike. I run those on mine, the Ritchey somethings....I forget the exact model. Great tire though!

I don't know what your clearance is like.

The Hutchison Bulldogs run pretty wide but are still in the normal 'cross range.

There are several cross tires in the ~40mm range, like one version of the Ritchey Speedmax. You might have clearance for these tires, maybe not. Maybe just in the fork.

Then there are the super oversized cross tires/narrow 29er tires, such as the Panaracer Fire Cross. Bontrager also has one or two narrowish 1.8 29er tires. I doubt these will fit on the back of your bike, but maybe on the front. Maybe.

I run a WTB interwolf in the front, 700x38. Love it to death.

I ride my Wazoo on S. Arizona singletrack with a 44mm WTB Mutanoraptor in the front, and a 42mm IRD Mythos CX Slick (it's not really slick, that's just the name) in the back. Does pretty well, though it's easy to break the rear loose on climbs. I can fit a 2.1" tire (Maxxis Ignitor) in the front, but the toe overlap is a little scary. I've heard good things about the Bonty tires, and would like to try some.

+1 on the speedmax. I run the 32's on my CC in the south NM desert and haven't had any trouble. They will still sink in the deeper sand that a 2 inch could handle, but I ride off-road with them all the time.

i scored some irc mythos cx slicks in size 42 from nashbar. they are pretty killer especially when you air em down a little. they barely fit my specialized s-works m4 and once i broke a spoke and the tire rubbed pretty bad on the frame. something to think about.
