i'm looking for a polished canti style brake to use on my cross check. i like both the cr720s and the cafams with the cafams having a nicer finish. my LBS guy (whom has given excellent advice and input on everything else thus far), says the IRDs have a little plastic dustcap that if it were to break you'd lose braking function. has anyone had experience with these and know what he's referring to?

the cr720s on the other hand have a dull satin finish which is not as desirable. i've already confirmed that there won't be any heel or pannier clearance issues with these.

the other option is to go with a polished set of tektro oryx, but i was looking for increased braking performance as well as a cosmetic upgrade.

Oryx is a great brake and the best bang for the buck in my opinion. As easy to set up and adjust as a V brake. Looks great, lasts forever.

Yeah, the Oryx are good, affordable brakes. You just need to set them up right, with the triangular transverse cable holder thingy low enough. If you're looking for increased braking performance (over what?), then get the ultimate brake pads, Kool-Stop MTB 80mm dual compounds.

I've heard great things about the CR720, though I haven't tried them myself.

i have the oryx currently. they aren't horrible, but i've heard great things of the cr720s. i just pulled the trigger on some, 40$ for both front and rear. :thumb: i'll probably use the pads they come with for a while then go to some koolstops.
