I bought this bike at a yard sale....yada, yada, yada...No, really I did. Won't tell the price, unless you really want to know. I've been riding an early 90's Trek steel 730 Multitrack for years; but nothing like the smooth, sweet quality of this bike. Doing a lot of web research to find out more, obsessing more like it. Can't find much info, even though I can tell it is held in high esteem by the steel tourer crow.
Questions: What is the date range. I've seen the photo expose that someone put up for the 83. Is that the first year? I've read that it was designed by Jim Merz, others say Neenan?. But, how can a bike that appears to be a Miyata 1000 with Specialized labels on it, be considered designed by anyone but the Miyata designer?:)

Got tired of looking at the "1" under responses, so, decided to reply myself. Update: Talked to someone selling an 84 Expedition and got some good info. The braze-on mounted shifters, as opposed to the clamp-on shifters, came out in late 84 according this guy. So he dats my bike as 85-87. Sounds good to me.

Just go to the vintage trek site and look up the component date codes. Seat post and crank arms may have open dating.

I'm not crazy about the speedo cable wrapped around the fork but, that is a good looking bike. Enjoy.

Agreed, came with the bike that way. Only thing I've done is put a saddle on it. Oh, and the bottle cage is mine. I have put Cane Creek hoods on it that Loose Screws said would fit. They don't. Dia Compe hoods don't fit on Superbe. About a quarter inch too big.

I dated it to between 85-87 for a number of reasons. I've decided that's god enough for me. Time to stop fussing over it and just ride it.

Looks very good. Did they come stock with the Sanyo Generator that mounted behind the bottom bracket?I thought it was a nice item, but I don't think they were too popular.
You can get cable ties in Home Depot,,that open and close,,don't have to saw them off. Helps with computer installations.
