I'm curious about the triathalon scene, and would quite like to try one or two at some point (or more if I find I really like them), and am kinda curious as to what the atmosphere is like and what goes on in the transition areas. I figured the easiest way to do this (well, possibly not the easiest, but what may be the most insightful/fun, would be to go and volunteer at an Ironman).

Is this a foolish thing to do, considering atm I have no idea? The last thing I want to do is slow down the athletes in any way or make their race experience any less than the best.

Also what do the jobs actually envolve, I think getting one of the transition area jobs would be of most interest to me (although people have said the body marking can be good :D) but the descriptions are a weeney bit vague and I'd rather know more acuratly what I'd be letting myself in for.

Thanks for any info you can give me.

GO FOR IT!!!!! Races always need volunteers, and it is a great way to learn. Instructions will be clear and you will not slow anyone down very much. As for jobs, sign up early, the jobs include anything from handing water to athletes to holding bikes while they go to the restroom. Just volunteer and see what happens.
