General Cycling Discussion - Trek 7.1 FX vs. Specialized Crosstrail?

Please help me!
I am trying to decide between the Trek 7.1 FX and Specialized Crosstrail base model.
I don't have a lot of money to spend right now (~$400), so I am trying to focus on getting the best base-model, hybrid-type bike available.

I'm estimating ~80-85% of the time, I will be riding on pavement. The rest of the time, I will use it on light, packed-dirt, trails.

I don't know too much about bikes, but I am learning as I read more and more forum posts.
Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated!

Trek's FX-series are hybrids that act more like road-bikes than they do as mountain-bikes. They do fine on packed dirt & gravel as well as pavement. And they readily lend themselves to being upgraded as the spirit moves you.

I can't speak from experience on the Specialized Crosstrail, but I highly recommend the FX to those looking for packed-dirt and pavement riding. That is their niche.

The Crosstrail has suspension fork oppose to the FX rigid fork,Crosstrail has wider tires and a kickstand,wow,if you have a choice to ride both,that will be the best way to find out.

For $50 more, you can get this (http://www.bikesdirect.com/products/dawes/ltcross.htm). Not a bad deal for an entry level 'cross bike.

I don't know how well that does on woodland-trails and gravel etc. But I'd recommend someone who is looking at hybrids to get a hybrid. And want a road-bike - get one of those - TOO.

I purchased a Crosstrail Sport last year to get me back into cycling. It more of a hybrid than the Trek. The shocks on the crosstrail can be locked out when on the road. I saw the FX also and liked it, but I found the Crosstrail more versatile for me.
