Touring - Do Trek 520 frame sizes run small with the new geometry?

Hey all,

I bought a 60cm 520, and the frame sits at precisely the same height as a friend's 54cm LHT, despite his having the smaller 26 inch wheels. Measuring my bike, I come up with 22.5 inches/57cm. Is the geometry just that different on the 2009 frame with the slanted top tube, or do I really have a 57cm? Would someone else mind measuring theirs to compare for me?

Of course the sticker says 60, and I feel OK on the bike other than some lower back aches that I am attributing to being unaccustomed to the road bike - it's sort of like that ache you get after working out. I want to be sure because I can still exchange it in the next couple days. I'm in that phase of purchase where you realize you just spent 1500 dollars on a bike that might not fit. Thanks in advance.

According to Trek's geometry page for the 520, you do have a size 60 XL and there is none larger

When I bought my Sherpa (with similar geometry) it fit +1 size. The size I normally road was obviously way to big. One size smaller worked out great.

Thanks guys. I didn't see that option with the measurements on the site.

I still think it's odd that it only measures 57.5cm, but it's listed as 60. Maybe there's a different method of measurement their using that I'm not aware of? Or maybe 57.5 w/ this geometry fits people with larger inseams than a list of 57 would imply; so, in a way it's more about marketing - that is, if they listed it at 57, it might scare some taller people away before they even considered the bike.

Anyway, thanks again.

Bikes with sloped top tubes frequently use a "virtual" frame size that would be the length of the seat tube if the top tube were horizontal, not sloped. It all gets rather vague so when sizing bikes I just go off the top tube length since it's more important anyway and isn't really adjustable.

Thanks, this was helpful.
