are they good for back pedaling on the street or does the left crank keeps getting slacky? had a pair of octalink cranks and they was definitiev not made to put force on them both ways.

i´m talking about this cranks:

Uh.....If you are having problems with an octalink BB/crank.....You are probably installing them wrong.

I've had Shimano 105 cranks with an octalink BB and it is fine. And I backpedal/skid/skip stop all the time. I beat the hell out of them.

Octalink is definately fine for backpedaling. So I wouldn't worry about it. But you might want to try and figure out why you are having problems before messing up another crankset.

well the problem i see in octalink is that the grooves of the bb and crank are not conic so if the grooves of the spindele dont match exactly up with the ones of the cranks you can slightly turn the spindle in the crank while packpedaling what results in a loose crank bolt. if the force is all the time in the same direction like on a freewheel it should be fine but not on a fix.

so how does the conection of left crank and bb look like is it conic like a squeretaper or more like the splinted octalink?

No problem with mine. Omnium's are great in my experience. Strong and cheaper than some of the other crank sets out there.

Doesn't shimano use octalink on their dura ace track cranks? I'm sure it's fine for backpedaling....just like the Omniums will be fine.

I've been riding with this crank on my bike for a year now and right through a Wisconsin winter. I have no complaints about it. Skidding would be no problem if I were geared down and on a bike with a shorter wheelbase.

great cranks, and if you look around you can get them for a great price, and i mean great, because i picked up a new set+bottom bracket for $145 shipped on the bizzle.
