will these wheels fit a 9 speed cassette?
and what are the black circles on the ends of the rear wheel axle? (see link)

actually, i know they accept 9 speed, but what are those black plastic circles on the ends of the rear axle?
prevents the axle from poking a hole in the wheel box and acting like limbs outside of a moving car.

At least the advertiser is being honest. They do, in fact, look "well used".
yup.
think about it. large box, big cross section, hollow innards with one protrusion.
what will happen when another heavier box lands on that?

Right. They are plastic disks with center spikes that stick into the hollow axle ends to keep them in place. They are used when shipping wheels to prevent damaging the box.

Definitely 9's but those look like old school ultegra's laced to a (newer, but pretty well used) mavic open pro rim. Seems a bit strange to me . . .
Annoys me when the logo on the hub and the rim don't line up, but that's just me.
Mine (newer hub style) looks like this:

The black circles are just pieces of plastic that help protect the axle ends while shipping. They just slip off the ends of the axles once you want to actually use the wheels.

I disagree. The image you provided looks like the 9sp ultegra hubs I used to have. The one pictured, as well as the freebody on it, looks like the 10sp hubs I have ordered for people in the past 2 years.

+1 that Johnknappcc's wheels are probably older. 1st gen Ultegra 9 speed. And isn't it the hub's logo and the valve stem hole supposed to line up, (looking down the valve stem hole you should see the hub logo)? Not the hub logo and the rim logo (I think you are thinking of tire logo, and rim logo there).
