Well I for one, don't care about history, so for me, it is a solid, well made frame. I would would pay no more than $75 for it, if it was a size I could use.

Columbus SLX steel tubes, hand made, lugged construction, paint in excellent condition. I'd say $446 is not a bad deal. What could you get new for that price? A 4130 Steamroller?

i had a max bid for 200 bucks. where/what would you guys recommend for a track setup frame (such as the one i posted) for around 300-400 bucks? ebay seems to overprice pretty much everything.

bump,
found this on ebay again? I read that Lotus from the 80's had a good rep, but what do you guys think should i shoot for a 300 max bid?

I think it's a risk. Lotus did offer some nice bikes, but there is no description of the tubing and no picture of the sticker (looks like columbus?). I would be weary, I also think you can get a very nice complete bike for the same price if you are patient.

That is CERTAINLY a Columbus decal...well worth the two bills! Go for it!

That Mondonico is a beautiful frame. I think it is definitely worth what the buyer paid. The thing about these vintage, hand-made bikes, is that beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Some people don't care about them and wouldn't pay over $100. Some people prize them and would pay anything for such a nice looking frame.
Back to your question about a "track setup frame". You need to be looking for an actual track frame if that is what you want. Sure, you can make a sweet fixie conversion from one of these road frames, but you won't be riding it on the velodrome.

fyi, i am referring now currently to the Lotus in my previous post, not the original post, that frame is no longer available.

Are you riding this in the street or on the track? If you want a track bike then you need to know that ONLY a real track bike will do...if it's a fixed streetbike...then pull the trigger on the Lotus!

Keep an eye on your local CL, nice complete bikes come up all the time and you can get one for $300 or so.

street bike for now, track bike to follow. I am currently riding an SE Draft completely stock. I wanted to try out fixed gear and figure i would find a nice, interesting frame to build up.

If you're looking to go back and forth between street and track on ONE bike get a true track bike. Newer ones keep the track geometry but use forks that either have drilling or can be swapped for drilled forks. Road geometry is relaxed...track geometry is more agile, less input makes the bike move quicker. I'd consider KHS/Mercier TT, Fuji track PRO...etc.

Check out the Leaders at www.leaderbikestore.com.
They are great bikes at a very affordable price. I picked on up about a month ago and already have the urge to build up another. Just for the love of it.
As a rookie rider, I had a lot of dumb questions about cycling. I spoke to Leader reps Sal and Chris and was greated with patience and great service. Id buy one from them just for being good to the customer.
The bike it self rides like a dream. Before making my purchase I took others for a test-ride including the Bianchi Pista, Surly SR, Fuji Obey, Cannondale Capo and a few others. I can't speak for everyone but this bike fits me very well for what I do which is: Riding drunk from bar to bar, long endurance rides around Long Beach, and commute to and from work.
I love my Leader!

nvm
hello. that first one was a mondonico. worth every penny of $460 in that condition. kicks the crap out of the lotus fer shur.
OP, if you're looking for an interesting conversion, 80s lugged steel is the place to be. DO NOT chop off the brazeons...when you grow up, you'll be kicking yourself. look for good tubing and an under the radar builder.

I've never heard of Mondonico, but if it's SLX and nicely lugged/hand braised in excellent condition I don't get why people think it's a ripoff for $450. That kind of money will buy a new Taiwanese Soma Rush frame at best, and I for one wouldn't mind riding a Mondonico or similar vintage Italian frame at that price. I happen to own a Rush and an 82 Colnago Super frame I bought used and built up as a fixed gear on the cheap. Can you guess which bike goes out on nice days and which one is the beater?
I've never ridden a Leader frame and they may be great, but comparing a Columbus Italian handmade frame to modern aluminum is completely apples to oranges. Someone who is excited about riding a Leader vs. that Mondonico probably don't live in the same emotional zip code.

I am sure it sounds like an advertisement but I assure you, I don't work for Leader or have any standing relationship with anyone there.
Simple fact is, I found a bike that works for me and I love it. These forums are designed for feedback and opinions, are they not?.
I love my bike as I am sure you do yours. And I think the guys at Leader were great.
I support the company because I believe I found a good product at a great price and I believe that I bought it from good people.
I should be allowed to be a fan?

Don't get me wrong, I'm not dissing Leader. I've never ridden one. We all have bikes we love and recommend. I just meant that a modern aluminum frame and a vintage Italian steel frame are on different ends of the spectrum. I'm partial to vintage steel bikes, but YMMV. I'm probably the stupid guy, since I've gotten rid of everything except for old steel frames and bikes with ancient technology. They just happen to float my boat for whatever reason.

Cool. Thanks for the link. I just bought a Marnati which I also knew nothing about and have found little info on the internet. I guess I'll know better once I put some miles on it. I'm always interested to find things outside of the usual Colnago, De Rosa, etc.
