Pretentious cyclists meets ****** bag SUV driver. Hilarity ensues.

And pardon me for being pedantic, but you can't be dragged if your laid out across the hood.

I had this vision in my head of a guy holding onto the grille of the car, with his head and chest on the hood and his legs being dragged.

This one made it to the front page of reddit:

Lots of exposure on this one. Of course, probably only because it was a fox news writer that was involved.

Yep. Made it to tons of blogs, etc.; seemingly purported/interpreted as fact.

I agree with CB. If it is taken overwhelmingly serious by an unusual number of sources, it reinforces the fact that its a poorly written joke.

I don't know, it may very well be a real story. That Broderick guy really was a reporter for the New York Post in '92 and really is a Fox reporter now. Doesn't seem like they'd use a real person in a joke story like that. And Fox reporters are notorious for being aholes.

I think this is a real story:

And I don't see what the problem was with where the cyclist was riding if he was maintaining the speed limit. This was in a park.

I obviously don't condone violence or what the guy in the car did but I think many times (in this case in particular), we cyclists need to stay cool. I know that it can be aggravating and we get a sense of cycle rage when a car cuts us off, yells profanity at us to get off the road, etc. I know it's really annoying because we know we are right and they are ignorant and wrong.

This isn't going to be a popular stance around here but I feel that we are riding a small bicycle while they are riding tons of metal and steel. It doesn't do any good if I'm insisting that I was right while I'm sitting on a wheelchair paralyzed because I had to insist on telling a driver that he was wrong with my middle finger. Sure the driver may be prosecuted, may be sent to jail, etc...but does it really make it better if I'm sitting in a wheelchair for the rest of my life?

I think most drives tend to like me because I generally stay out of their way and I've even gone as far as pulling over to the side for a few seconds to let a stream of cars go by if the road is too narrow. This is much better than them trying to squeeze by me and putting me in a position where I can hit the curb on the right side or get forced closer to cars where a guy decides to open his door.

This case would have been avoided if the cyclist simply continued riding even after the SUV almost clipped him.

Coolers heads will eventually prevail.

but sometimes people need to told what's up, they just do some really stupid things and they will never know it until someone tells them that they're being idiots.

but sometimes people need to told what's up, they just do some really stupid things and they will never know it until someone tells them that they're being idiots.

Most of these idiots would not know what's up if their mother's told them.

If the driver looks like a reasonable person who is simply ignorant of such laws, then there should be no issue in communicating knowledge in a calm and instructive manner.

However, these idiots who yell things, throw coke cans, yell profanity, etc...are idiots. A cyclist yelling profanity back at them does nothing more than fuel the situation and does not teach or inform the aforementioned idiot. At best, the cyclist feels a little better getting the feeling of rage off his chest. At worst, it's car vs. bike and I don't care who you are, the bike will lose.

A few analogies:

1) When you're at a club and another guy does something stupid (drunk guy spills his drink on you, steps on your feet, pushes you to get through, etc.) most guys will start talking to the drunk guy telling him to lay off, etc. But if the drunk guy is 6'8" and 300 pounds of muscle and you have a 5'7" 145lb cyclist body, there's a line you don't cross. Why?

2) When walking the streets you come across a crosswalk and the light turns green. In many parts of the US, a pedestrian will immediately walk into the crosswalk regardless of cars coming. If a car doesn't stop, the pedestrian will get angry and stand right in the way of the car to force the car to stop. However, this approach does not work in most 3rd world countries and it's a fast way to get yourself paralyzed or killed. But in the end, of course the pedestrian was right since the crosswalk light was green. Does it do any good?

There's a time and place.
