Folding Bikes - Something for my fellow tweakers... (an R20 thread)

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I was over at the LBS the other day as I am helping my friend shop for a new bike and of course, I have considered a folder for her as it would really suit her recreational riding style and the fact she likes to travel and might want to take her bike with her.

I was looking over the Giant Halfway which seems to be a pretty decent bike and was quite pleased with the test ride I took... it had the same solid feel that my P20's have and really felt very much like a stock 20.

But what interested me most was the brakes used on the Giant as it has Alhonga HJ - 893A brakes.

The front brake stopped the bike really well with some flex but the rear brake, being that it is braced against the rear stays worked amazingly well and felt really solid.

I have to take a few measurements to check the fit but do think that this would be a wonderful replacement for the stock R20 brakes as with a 93 mm reach a drop bolt should not be needed.

I like this, a lot. Makes it much easyer to find a good fork for a folder or keep the stock one. I found I like canti brakes better than V and this looks to be closer to canti.

The forks on my BMX folders at present are a bit on the heavy side, but I use them since they`ve got the canti studs.

How is the weight ? Price? What brake levers is used?

Sixty Fiver,

Thanks for posting these brakes as I also think they might be the answer to many R20 owners' brake upgrades, in fact I've found a shop that has them here in Oz for $35AU each. I might buy a set and install them on my wife's R20. If I do, I'll post my thoughts on their performance.

I am thinking that also for the rear brakes this is a great suggestion, since brazeons or coasterbrake hubs is the only relatively easy solution to modern brakes on old folders.

cool a modern version of the Raleigh RSWs pressed steel delta brake
I would fit the RSW brake to my 20. But its old and wobbly.
I tried to fit a Weimman Vanquier 750 centrepull. But it didnt have the reach. Even with a home made bracket to mount it

That is a super nice looking front brake for the R20.
Do we know that it fits OK, can anyone confirm? (Before I get one sent from Australia)
Thanks for posting.
