Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - Painting with Mineral Spirits?!

Whats all this hype with painting frames with 3/4 rustoleum enamel and 1/4 mineral spirits? I've never painted a bike before.

Also how do you wet sand a bike in between coats? I've seen it done on American Hotrod, but the technique is pretty foreign.

Spirits will thin the enamel which allows it to settle more before it dries.
Wet sanding is simply sanding with soapy water. It eliminates dust and helps keep the paper from clogging. Not really important for what you're doing IMO,unless you're rubbing it out. Dry sanding between coats is more than fine.

has no one seen the rustoleum paint jobs done on cars? our horse trailer was done this way, and if you actually take time to wet sand it it looks damn nice. ****ing use google, and you'll see rustoleum paint jobs actually can turn out nice.

nah i'm new to the game of bike painting.

treat me like i'm five years old, what do i need to do? I've got a Centurion Le Mans frame and fork with stock paint on them. I've heard that sandblasting and powdercoat is around 70 bucks, but I wanna do a design so I'm ruling all that out. I've searched this forum for a little bit and havent found a step by step guide on the right way to do this. Thanks for your help

one of many DIY routes: strip it thoroughly, clean it up thoroughly, use a self etching primer, sand, wipe down with alcohol, basecoat, wetsand, another coat, wetsand, tape off and do the design stuff, wetsand, touch it up, wetsand, order some of this stuff http://www.repaintsupply.com/pd_2_part_2k_aerosol.cfm for the clearcoat. its a 2 stage clearcoat in an aerosol can. dries extremely hard and extremely clear. plus, its self-leveling so you dont get that orange peel texture, it looks legit.

on the other hand, powdercoat places can do design.

maybe. even so, there are better primers out there :)

e.g., bulldog adhesion promoter (this stuff is like magic if used properly)

ive painted my entire car with the same method. comes out real nice. i was pleased. we call it the 50 dollar paint job.
