I have been wanting to build up a ss for a while. I have a cross check, but rely on it as my main source commuting transportation and don't want to convert it. I have been trying to find a cheap road bike to convert.
Living next to a college campus, cheap bikes get left at the various apartment complexes all the time. A former neighbor left a Roadmaster mtb about a year ago, and I was passing it one day when I noticed that it had nearly horizontal dropouts, more so than even the cc. So I pulled of the derailers and shifters, picked a front and rear gear that make a good chainline, pulled off all the decals, and off I go. I have gotten comments on how cool the bike is. I don't tell them that I started with an abandoned xmart bike.
