Oh, my goodness, check out what my good friend just bought...

http://gaggleofun.wordpress.com/2009/06/10/i-am-the-proud-owner-of/

That Madsen cargo bike that hauls 4 kids comfortably!!!!

I went and took it for a spin & fell in love! And, I can't believe 25% off coupon... how could I not!?!? AND, you can enter to win a free one, which if you win, they'll refund your money if you already bought one AND give you another to sell or keep! Ohhhhhhhhhh, this pains me!!!

It looks a LOT like the Xtracycle but under $1000 shipped! That's what is so tempting.

Ahhh, I got to ride it! Oh, man! What I currently ride is THIS (http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3582/3455569789_7d86335b14.jpg) And, I have to say, the Madsen made my load feel like NOTHING! My friend is having trouble balancing it, but I found WAY easier than what I currently have & she's not quite as into riding as I am. (She has trouble just pulling a trailer)

Oh, I love it. I want one. I just wish I had the money!

There have been some other posts (Recreation & Family, I think?) about how young to cycle- with the opinions that children younger than a year shouldn't be on a bike no matter what kind seat they're in.

As to that holding 4- kids...they'd have to be real little guys...

Thanks for the opinion. We are comfortable cycling with our kids.

I got to borrow my friends to test it out with my kids. My baby (11 mos) didn't ride, but I fit my 65 lb 7 year old son, 40 lb 5yo daughter, 43 lb 3.5yo daughter & 35 lb neighbor boy in it... and it was FINE!

It's really really cool!

I think for the baby joyfulmama, you could put him/her in an infant car seat & belt it to the bucket using one of the seatbelts... it would probably ride just the same as a car.

I should note that by "fine" I mean that it was fine considering I was hauling 4 kids! :lol

Hey, just fyi, Madsen is doing another bike giveaway. This time they're giving away more bikes!

In my own quest for kid-hauling, I think I'm honing in on a used tandem bike with the tag-a-long and then the bike trailer behind. I think it'll grow with us more than the Madsen... although... if I WON a free Madsen... I'd be loving that!

MamaC, I know you mentioned used Tandems. However, I figured I'd throw out that new Worksman Tandems (http://worksmancycles.com/shopsite_sc/store/html/page46.html) aren't too shabby on prices. Though they'll be heavier (yet sturdier) than an Aluminum Tandem.

Oh...my...goodness! I didn't KNOW you could get a tandem for less than a semester at Community College!!!!

My neighbor is selling his VERY old tandem and offered it to me for $100 if I saved him from listing it on Craigslist. But... a new shiny one... for $400! I'm going to look into this! Thank you, jdmitch!

Glad to be of help.

FYI, Worksman make a lot of cool bikes that seem to be unknown. Like: Penny Farthings (http://worksmancycles.com/shopsite_sc/store/html/page38.html) & Family Chariots (http://worksmancycles.com/shopsite_sc/store/html/ChariotTricycle.html). But they're bikes appear to be a steal.
