Mountain Biking - Downhill?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

What do you guys think? I'm a newbie but my friends talking me into doing downhill. I'm gonna try it on my Haro and if I get into it i'll sell the Haro and get a downhill bike. But do you guys think I should try it?

My friends are trying to talk me into ice skating, you think I should try it?
You gotta give us some more info, unless someone on this board knows you personally.

Well, i'm bad at noticing sarcasm. But if you were kidding about skating. Hockey is sick. I've been playing for 6 years, its an awesome sport. But back to bikes. What kind of info are you looking for?

Have you dhilled? Do you like speed, do you like your heart pumping a mile a minute. You had better like crashing, drops, jumping. Can you go fast over roots and rocks or do you 'navigate' the trail.
I wouldn't dump the bike. Most dh trails you can do with a ht and a good fork. I would try it a few times first, go with someone experienced who can help you see lines suited for dh.
Also you don't need a dh bike if you don't race. You could easily purchase a fr or long travel trail bike that would work really well on dh trails. I would never waste my money on a purebread unless
a) you race
or
b) you really only like DH and nothing else. Why? Cause dh bikes suck for almost anything but pointing down
or
c) You have a couple of bikes to fullfill all your needs.
Cheers and good luck. I only started dh recently and by god is it fun.

If you ride bikes you should try all forms, DH, freeride, XC, road, BMX, trials and also a race or two. This is just my opinion but it will make you a better rider and why limit yourself when there are so many possibilities?

I agree with this. Get out there and try it and if you like it great and if you don't you can go back to riding what is more fun. I have never been on a real DH trail but going downhill on my trails is a blast.

Yeah, I have done a downhill trail at a friends house and it was fun. So I really wanna get into the next race. I'm almost working up to higher and higher drops. The highest, that I landed smoothly, was 4.5ft.
Go out to the local downhill course usually on a ski hill in the summer and try the runs there. See what downhill all about. Downhill is hard on the legs so don't expect to not feel any pain after you been standing on your pedals for 20 minutes.

So you and your friends have an aversion for roadies and XCers? http://forums.anandtech.com/i/expressions/face-icon-small-confused.gif
I also agree with riding all styles apart from road and xc.
That seems rather contradictory.

Possibly an aversion to people who ONLY xc...

That's a really good idea. Let's start isolating each aspect of mountain biking. It'll be like the BMX vs skateboarding drama.

In some parts theres a lot of bmx mtb drama with mtb starting to have a lot of street riders. Really unfortunate.
