Northeast - Looking for an 80's Era "10 Speed"

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I have tried to talk a friend of mine out of this idea with no sucess, so...
He is looking for a "10 Speed" bike from his youth to ride around town. Something like the old Panasonics, Schwinns, Sears, etc. Drop handle bars, suicide brakes, 27X1.25 tires, stem shifters, etc.
I have looked with him all over LI and can not find a bike. Obviously there is no such thing sold new anymore.
Does anyone have a bike that they are willing to part with? He is about 5' 10", but I am pretty sure color and size are not his concern. I can repair most anything, so a few problems is not a problem.
Please PM me
Thanks, Mark
Mark I can't believe there are no such bikes to be had out on LI - i realize it was 10-20 yrs ago, but I used to fish them out of people's trash in very good condition all the time.
Not suggesting you go dumpster diving, of course, but if you come up empty here, keep an eye out during fall cleaning (Labor day weekend?) and keep watching CL.
If coming in to Manhattan or Brooklyn is an option, check out: http://www.recycleabicycle.org/shops
I think they charge more than, say, a garage sale would for old bikes, but they should be ready to roll and safe to ride (well - as safe as those old 10 speeds can be to ride!). If you'd rather save him $ and do the work yourself, they might have a frame they'll sell you....can't hurt to ask.

Thanks, I never thought of a Garage Sale. There has to be 1000's of these things setting in garages. We hit all the LBS and searched CL for weeks with no luck (local). Ebay seemed a reach, but I might check.

D'oh, if you would have posted this 3 weeks ago I would have sold/traded you my '88 World Sport for pretty cheap. My summer sublet tenant is using it for now. He's gone by late Aug, but that's a long ways away.
I recently bought a bike from a guy on craigslist. Sold me a pristine Schwinn World Tourist. I'm not sure where his sources are, but he usually brokers really good stuff. I'll PM you with contact/details.
If you don't see bikes at the Garage sale, I'd ask - they might pull something nice out of storage to get rid of....

I set up google reader to tell me when there are garage sales in towns around me. there are 5 or 10 every weekend, and all you have to do is send them a quick email to see if they'll send you a picture of the bike in question, or at least describe it.

Sweet rides. I'm with you, but not everyone likes dumpster diving;)
I have a Nishiki that fits the description.
Its still in great shape with new tires, I rode it about a month ago.

I just gave away my '79 Raleigh Gran Sport!
Saw another Raleigh at a friend's garage sale last weekend. It'd be a haul from LI (in Schenectady), but if you like I could contact the friend to see if it's still available. I noticed that it was complete, but didn't pay much attention to the condition otherwise. Suicide levers in place, original seat, sidepull brakes (mine had centerpull).

Have you tried any of the outdoor flea markets in LI? I don't know if you're close to Valley Stream, but that's where I go sometimes and they usually have a few bikes like what you're looking for.
