My granddaughter recently got her stolen bike back. It was a Redline 440 so, while not a real high end bike, it's not all-that-common either. She happened to see it in the bike rack at her school. Called her mom who went to the school with the serial number. The school principal just hung around the bike rack at the end of the day, collared the kid who tried to ride off with it, and called the cops. The kid said that he found it in the woods so I don't know what is going to happen with him, probably not much. I wonder what story he told his parents. They knew they hadn't bought the bike but they didn't report it to the police as having been found either.

Key points are: 1. My daughter had recorded the bike serial number so she could positively identify the bike as hers. 2. The bike had been reported as stolen to the police. I know these things don't always turn out this way but, if you do those things, at least you have a chance.
