Samwiches: Actually, the bike is for a friend - I don't think he cares about what's cool as much as keeping up with me on training rides.
I weight heavily toward the Salsa due to better components on the stock model, personally. I just thought I'd ask you cats.

Better components? The Salsa has Surly hubs and basically the same drivetrain.
The Salsa has forward facing dropouts.
Sloping top tube is a preference thing, but I sure prefer the straight ones.
For my money, it's a no brainer. Steamroller.

If you're considering the Salsa then you should also consider the Surly Crosscheck as well.
Since you're friend is not doing any track work, they should look for the Casseroll or Crosscheck due to the perks of fitting fenders. The Crosscheck would be the better of the two though since it can fit really big tires and allows gears to be put on it as well (just like the Casseroll)
If you're friend is only looking for speed, then he should go for the Steamroller.

Crosscheck is cheaper than the Casseroll, and IMO it's a better deal all around for the amount of bike you get. I really recommend that frame.
