NEW HAVEN — A North Haven man commuting home on the Farmington Canal trail was assaulted and robbed Monday evening.

The victim, an administrator from Yale University, was in the area of Shelton Avenue and Division Street on his Blue Diamond Back Mountain Bike when he was set upon by four or five teenagers. He was punched on the back of his head and the youths stole his bike.

According to an e-mail sent out by Yale police, there was also a second assault on the trail at about the same time. No injuries were reported.

Who is going to ride there if they fear getting jumped?

well, we should state the obvious here: the section from New Haven to Hamden is definitely crime alley. True story from three years ago, a buddy & I were running on it on a nice afternoon & after the trail abruptly ended somewhere between NH and Hamden, we went looking for the trail head. We asked the cops in a cruiser where the trail head is & they told us something to the effect of: don't come here, the kids will steal your glasses, your shirts, and your shoes just for the hell of it.
