Foo - (nothing to do with bikes) anyone have a projector hooked up to their TV?

so, i was laying in bed the other night staring at my wall and the idea struck me: why don't i get a projector, hook it up to my DVD player or VCR and watch movies projected on the wall? sounds pretty easy right? so i started looking around for projectors and they are like a thousands dollars!! :(

i like the idea of a projector because they are small and i have a perfect wall for this, but i cannot afford that much money. they all seem to have too many features that i don't need. i really only want an RCA input. is there anything else i can do? for around $300 dollars? i really don't want to buy a larger TV.

Would one of those power point projectors work?
The cheapest good quality "projector" i have seen was made by Sony and cost a couple of grand. A good screen to project it on was several hundred dollars, and the screen quality is more important than the projector.

Try ebay, you can get ones for several hundred bucks.
They also sell TV glasses, you put em on and it simulates a 60" screen in front of you. I believe those go for several hundred too.

You could hunt around for a used projection TV. I've never seen too many of them, but you get a really big screen for the amount of space they take up, and most of them fold up to save space.

I've seen CRT projectors for as low as $800, but I'm a little skeptical of the quality. Generally, a good one costs $3000+.

I have a projector (Toshiba TLP-S10) which cost me about 1000 euros (a bit more than 1000 dollars US). It is a luxury item but I really like it for DVD's especially. Bear in mind that you will need a decent sound system to match the big screen. Good sound is just as important as the picture. A projector screen will improve the image but you could get away with projecting on the wall.

You should also remember that the projector bulbs have a limited life expectancy (typically 2000-3000 hrs). They are very expensive to replace. Ones for mine are about 300 euros I think.

The end effect is just like having a cinema in your own house. It is not cheap but I think it is great.

Most are around\above 2000 lumens now bro, plenty bright.

What do you want?, I can maybe find links to crazy do it yourself guys. Ebay yes, the bulb is more than $300 to replace though.

They are about $2000 now for nice tools. DVD? Naw, above 800 by 600 dpi computer screen images is where they shine. Will do millions of colors. T.V is rgb. 3 colors, it's o.k, but not like when you run svga into them.

I know enough to probably answer a few questions concerning most projection, film or digital.

Looking at Toshiba(not widescreen) 36" crt, but I would prefer a projection unit for less weight, bigger screen and it will fit closer to the wall.(Those big tube units stick out three feet from the wall, the room is only twelve feet deep)

Well, I'd go projector. Way expensive but good news, all bugs gone- technology is say 10 years old and stable.
Bad news is the bulbs wont go down in price- Most near $500. rated 2000hrs + and this clocks in the computer so if it is faulty and say you went E*son, you send to factory- they ship back right.

Also being new technology and very usefull, you can rent for presentations, film showing etc.

A rental if I had to, would be $200- $400 per day.

A plasma is not projection, the other is a digital projector with a supa-wide lens mounted in a cabinet featuring the screen as the front surface.
Very low power- only one type of use.

I would think used lcd on ebay 's o.k, going to need a new bulb probably so add $400 + to the purchase. Major company, check on bulb availability etc.
A 1400 lumin is fine, 2000 bright for home but they have onboard controls for everything.

Kinda overblown for home- but I have friends who own- The big game? dude...you are KING for a day.

Sorry, not very clear on a point, the ones I'm recommending have no screen, you point them @ the wall. Same size as a stereo etc and they take computer svga s-video and rca input.

Home unit, i'd go a bit brighter, the bulbs dim over time, and the native res is low..( didn't really spec it, example.)

Nice little guy though. Just aim @ a white wall.

dude. you can play video games on that sony trinitron 40 ich without having to worry about it burning the tube! games are much better than t.v. (just play metroid prime or zelda the windwaker... xenosaga should also be good... and vagrant story... xenosaga might provide the kind of depth you probably like, although it is sci fi, and wind waker is just something that's wonderful to even just look at.) what does 2 feet matter anyway?
