Introductions - biker on a budget in Somerville, MA

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
Hi All,
I joined the forum to find some advice to help keep my bike running on the road without my wallet running out of cash.
I ride an old Trek 820 beater to work everyday and around town on the weekends. Dreaming of someday owning a nice touring bike with a 7-speed internal-gear hub.
Cheers,
Carlo

Hi Carlo,
Welcome to the Forums. I'm a year round commuter from Kenmore Square to Norwood. I don't do much mechanical work on my bike (I use a great bike shop), but I hope you pick up the advice you seek as much as much as I've learned about commuting. What is you commuter route?
Hi Jim, thanks for the greeting. My route is much shorter than yours -- a measly 3 miles each way from Somerville to Beacon Hill.

Thanks for the reply. Your commute may be "measly," but you do get congested urban traffic on narrow streets; all I have are wide suburban roads with light traffic flow and no parked cars.
