The shifters were these really awful grip shifters that I grew to hate in the 90s. My friend took them off my hands for $10. Along with the LX fr der. I've got a geared mtn bike, I was looking to set up a SS.
You can call it what you will but at least I didn't cut the braze ons off or hack the frame up.

It's his bike. He can do whatever he wants with it. I think it'll be a sweet SS. Perfect for riding trails.

New tires, tubes, new grips....put me at $135.
How did you manage to get tires, tube, and grips for $35 after tax and any shipping, if applicable? The cheapest mountain bike tires are $17 each from the shop I work at and Oury grips run about $12. Tubes are $5. That would put the minimum at over $60 after tax.
EDIT: And why did you take the rear brake off?

Leave it the way it is. Looks and am sure it rides great.

I used a hammer and a screwdriver to get the cassette off, just unscrew all of the shields and stuff and the bearings will fall out. Then put the freewheel in a vise and turned the wheel to get it off. I picked up a single speed freewheel off of ebay for $10.95. It looks very clean, I like it! I like the idea of a SS for some simple trail riding, good build!

Why?
He basically just turned it into a C.U.S.S.

"Question, is there a common tool that can remove the crank besides a crank puller? I'd rather not buy tools"
hammer, undo the bolt and beat it like anything
a plastic one is better, as it don't do as much damage
it is'nt the best way though by any means, you usually damage something
id buy a puller, they can be quite cheap and are very effective
ok so this isn't exactly a true conversion...XT rear der used as chain tensioner. I'm on a budget right now though and plan on truly converting it down the road. I bought this bianchi off a guy who road it once or twice. Paid $100 for it. Tires were rotted from storage. New tires, tubes, new grips....put me at $135. Question, is there a common tool that can remove the crank besides a crank puller? I'd rather not buy tools.
If those are genuine early XT cranks don't screw them up. As much as I like MTB conversions, that bike is worth too much to mess with. It's a fairly rare all XT MTB. IMO, put it back to original. Sell it and buy a new ride.

Tires are CST crusader....$9 a piece....grips were $6 on ebay...tubes were $3 a piece...plus shipping...ok actually now that I think about it, it was probably closer to $40 with shipping. There was no tax involved and I asked for everything to be sent parcel post shipping. Your shop is ripping people off if they are selling ourys for $12. CST tires can be had really cheap and they are made by the exact same company that makes other high end tires...they are just labeled differently.
The only XT component on this bike was the rear derailleur. It had an LX fr, has LX hubs laced to mavic rims...grip shifters weren't shimano they were some brand I've never heard of. Brakes are cheap dia compe.
However the crank is a white industries which is pretty sweet. The frame is tange prestige so the bike is incredibly light. It's also lugged steel which is cool. Nitto bars and stem(I'm fairly certain). I'm glad I got rid of the extra gearing and cabling...it looks a lot better now, imo.
Rear brake came off because I've ridden SS for years with just a front brake. I check the brake every time before I ride it.

Found the exact same one on craigslist...

mine had those tan-ish colored tires as well...they were rotted.

Nice frame! I have a soft spot for Grizzlys... I have 4 of em at the moment... gotta love 1" threadless ;)
He basically just turned it into a C.U.S.S.
except a B.O.S.S./C.U.S.S./whatever you feel like calling it has horizontal dropouts. A derailleur, Singleator, etc. will always be needed with a Grizzly.
Why no rear brake? no brake and MTB tires seems sketch, especially if you actually hit any trails that aren't flat.
are those the Sugino-made W.I. cranks? if so, might want to consider swapping out down the road.
whatever you do, have fun riding that thing :thumb:

I'm not going to be bombing single track. There's a dirt trail that connects a bunch of cities around where I live that I'll be using this on. Yeah they are sugino made WI cranks. Is the metal going to fail on them or something?
i cringe looking at that RD. probably damaged.
why didn't you just get indexed trigger shifters? you could have found some used ones for next to nothing.
i would rather have seen it with gears.
at least get a single speed tensioner and put a rear brake back on. and get some black or brown ourys.

You could have profited by about $300 on that bike if you hadn't screwed around with it.
Put the rear brake back on unless your dad is a dentist.

It is your bike, ride it however the hell you like, but you said you were on a budget and you could have had a starter track bike with the profit if you resold the Grizzly
godugr8
06-14-09, 11:46 AM
Making a big profit is just speculation. That guy is living in a dream world if he thinks he can get $500 for it. Please...no way I could have made that. I might have been able to make around $200. So what then? I've got $300 to buy a bike with a worse frame.
You cringe looking at the R der? It's functioning perfect and isn't damaged at all.
The orange ourys are staying.
Why would I want a cheap starter bike when I've got a decent hardtail mtb? I wasn't looking for a track bike. I was looking for a MTB.
I can see why I'm getting criticism for the rear brake. I'll think about putting it back on. However, all this talk about selling the frame, or keeping it as a geared bike isn't necessary because you're wasting precious internet bandwidth by posting.

not to nitpick, but you're a bit off-base. Easy to get if you hold out to find the right buyer. Maybe it's different in Oregon than where you are... but less than a year ago I sold a 97 Grizzly RC frame with LX/SLX parts for $900, and a few months ago, I sold a '96 Grizzly (same as yours) for $450 with the only upgrade from stock a matching xt front der. MSRP in '96 was just under $1000, and Grizzly frames have a pretty solid following and hold value pretty well.
Either way, it's a solid frame, and as long as you're riding, it's not a bad thing.

I was pretty shocked to see ghetto and Grizzly in the same sentence. I think I paid about $900 for a Grizzly in 1992, back when they had Suntour XC Pro.
I'm with the folks that suggest that you should get that thing back to stock; a high end bike that is that pretty should be kept as a piece of history. A midrange steel MTB from that era will perform just as well as the Grizzly and you'll be missing out on a lot less resale value.
Oh, and what's up with the pricepoint sticker? I thought all of those went straight to the trash as soon as the box was emptied!

06-14-09, 01:27 PM
crank pullers aren't expensive and you will save soo much work and frustration and angst and pain and suffering that comes from trying to pull cranks without a crank puller. and it's been said before but put a rear brake on that; it's not a fixie
godugr8
06-14-09, 02:09 PM
No I didn't mean the bike itself was ghetto. I meant it was a ghetto SS because it wasn't really converted properly.
It's not like it would be hard to put the gears back on. If I ever do, It'll be something nicer than what was on it.
I'll take my chances running a front brake only.

I can't wait to cover my freshly painted yellow bike in price point stickers. You have no idea what that means to me.
He has the right to do whatever he wants to whatever he owns.
i will say one thing, you should have not posted till it was a complete conversion that looked really nice. then people would have been less likely to bash it so bad.
Good luck with it and i am sure you will enjoy riding something you put your own time into
PS im loving the sarcasm towards the cock responses
I would have bought that bike off you for $300 if left stock.

1x9 is a great idea.
Too late now though as I think he already filed all the braze-ons off
godugr8
06-15-09, 10:47 AM
I could still sell it for $300 as a single speed easily on ebay...
oh wait wait, yes I filed the braze ons off and painted it yellow. I guess It's only valuable to me now. dang it. what am I going to do.

All that thing needs is a rear brake and you'll be good to go. I'd eventually pick up one of those cheap ass Forte SS kits to clean up the rear triangle a bit, but beyond that it's gold.
Grizzlies were nice, but it isn't like this is some super limited edition frame. Bikes is bikes.

Don't listen to this person.
I understand not doing this if you want to keep all the parts. And I know this isn't some cheap bike like I was working on when I did this. But if you're not going to reuse, or sell any parts, I don't see why it's not okay to possibly break them while taking them off. Anyway, I can't wait to see pics, I think it will look nice.
I really hope no one would be selfish enough to do that.

Just an update. When removing the braze ons I accidentally went a little to deep with the dremel and nearly went through the tubing. I'm gonna need to put epoxy over the enormous gap I created.
I still have faith in this project.

That frame's a little overbuilt anyways. It could prolly use some drillium.
If you gotta fill a hole, go bondo tho bro.
Let's see some pics!

K I pretty much lied about all of that.
The bike still looks exactly like it did in the first pic.
Are you just saying that to make up for being stupid, because either way, you look stupid.
