Mountain Biking - Moving to Hawaii, Best type of bike to bring ?

Hey every body another noob here. I just wanted to say hi I live in Longmont, Colorado. Favorite trail is the Hall ranch. Bike is 2000 trek 7000 (pimpin yellow pearl) with all XT and WH-M540 wheels, sid race front fork. I will be buying a Kona Coiler or Stinky, haven't made up my mind yet, My wife and i are moving to Honolulu in November and I am having trouble figuring out what bike would be best for the terrain there. (alot of climbing and long xc or down hill) are the trails rocky, filled with roots or smooth? Let me know what you think. most of the riding I do is xc I would like to do more downhill but still need a bike that i can climb with. Thank you for your help

I've heard the riding is muddy at lower elevations, and very rocky at the higher el.'s I would love to go with you if only you had a suitcase big enough to fit me and my bike in. :D

Hey there,

I live on Oahu...the Island you'll be living on if youre going to move to Honolulu. If you mostly like to do XC, go with the coiler, as its still a decent XC bike, but can handle some of the DH stuff we got out here from time to time. BUT, if you're thinking of doing more DH than anything...well, obviously the stinky or something bigger would be better. Anyway, our trails here for XC involve alot of steep ascending and descending and are very rooty. Most trails here are not rocky, unless you got to where we mostly ride DH. Its all rocks there. Basically we just skid down the boulders.
On this island, there are a few shops and about 10 or 15 legitimate trails you can go ride on at any given time. First thing you should do when you get here is pick up the book "Mountain Biking the Hawaiian Islands" or better yet, pick it up off amazon.com now so you have a better idea of whats up. Its a few years old, but not much changes here.
