Anybody watching?

Thoughts on any games?

I was proud to see Sweden slaughter Bulgaria. But they have bigger hills to climb now.

Germany vs Netherlands looked good, too, from what I could tell from the minute-by-minute on euro2004.com.

Unfortunately, no. There is no TV coverage of it out here.

I have managed to see it in some local bars who have BBC. None of them there?

America is generally too stupid to accept football as a sport, so I have to read about the tournament on the internet. They won't even put anything about it in the "Sports" section in our paper except for an occasional mention of a game on the last pages. Bass Masters and bowling get more reporting than real football.

There could be some bars who are showing it on FOX, but I really don't feel like wandering around the bars of Surfers Paradise at 2am. Especially given that during the week I'm working at 8am the next morning, and riding earlier on weekends.

Gotcha, makes good sense. You might check out euro2004.com to keep up on line with play-by-plays.

The Czec Republic is upsetting The Netherlands and maybe even Germany; we'll see what happens.

I was happy to see Sweden tie Italy yesterday in what was a great second half (that's all I saw aside from the replays of the pretty Italian goal). Man, those Italians are stingy when they want to be, double- and triple-teaming Henrik Larsson and Ljungberg and Ibrahimovic. Yikes.

The England/Croatia game ought to be a real butt clincher, too.

Yeah, Germany could be in trouble on current form. Fact is, they were bloody lucky to get even a draw against Latvia (!?) -- the two penalty appeals looked pretty good to me. I guess it's a question of how many players the Czechs will rest, having already qualified.

Denmark/Sweden should be an interesting game. One has to expect Italy to take care of Bulgaria, but will they score enough?

I'd probably favour England there, with the likes of Rooney & Beckham, but an upset wouldn't surprise me! Geez, how lucky have the French been in that group?

Oh yea! Maybe their cockiness will get the best of them in the end?... :D (Man that made me sound like waaaaay more of a Yank than I really am.)

You're right though, I've seen that happen to big teams in these tournaments before. One day they'll leave it too late...

Italy's out!!

Chris L

I saw that. Somehow I had a feeling they were going to go out. They can only blame themselves really.

I didn't see the England/Croatia game, but I read somewhere it was basically the Wayne Rooney show.

Seems like the whole event is the Rooney Show. Even heard a comparison with Pele. Hot damn! Although they have a much tougher game ahead of them with the home team.

Germany are out! They lost to a Czech Republic side that rested most of it's big guns. How the mighty have fallen.

Who's next?... England? Today could be their day.

Yup, England went down next. What an unexpected run of games. The way things are going I bet Greece is going to take it all.

Geez, you know, they just might! Although I think the Czechs are a class above them. Holland/Portugal should be interesting, too.

Or were they just lucky? I haven't seen them play.

Holland/Portugal should be interesting, too.

Yes, although just as my parents' Dutch friends have said: they can't score; even their on goal in this match was an own-goal!

I was hedging on Italy at the beginning... but I am clearly no clairvoiant.

I was sort of happy to see their cocky asses to be a little dejected. They've been all uppity. ;)

I wasn't terribly upset to see them go either. After all, they're basically half of the Arsenal team that I despise so much, it was nice to see them lose something!

alright but I was sure happy to see italy go too. Even though I would love to see them win, they are a bunch of pretty boy cry babies. Totti spitting in the defenders face made me ashamed to consider myself an Italy fan, It's a team of superstars just like france. It figures. Anyway I really want Portugal to win this, I would like Figo to take some sort of championship away with him before he retires.

Where does Figo play club ball?

I only guessed them because they seemed the greatest underdog in a tourny being won by underdogs.

Hey, did you see that Henke Larsson got picked up by Barcelona during the tourny?

I was just like "wow" when I saw they won. Good on the Greeks- it'll probably help lift the morale even more for the Games.

I had a Euro hat for Portugal, and I guess that means my team lost, but good on the Greeks!

According to the Greeks I heard on Triple J yesterday morning, the Olympics no longer matter after this.

I saw that, but I'm not sure they've got a good buy here. After all, most of the sides he was playing against last season in the Scottish Premier Division are about English Division 3 standard. It will be interesting to see if he can cope with the higher level of play week in/week out in Spain.

I don't see why he wouldn't do fine considering how well he plays internationally.

Funny experience I had yesterday: I voluteered to help out with the Cutting Crew Classic. I was making the trip from one duty at 18th and Damen up to Delaware and Dearborn, so I took 18th to Halsted and up. I passed right through Greek town and a Greek pub at what must have been the time they scored because everybody was going crazy. So in a sense, I witnessed the goal. If only I weren't blitzing past...
