Classic and Vintage Bicycles: What's it Worth? Appraisals and Inquiries - Trek 420

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
Just picked up a 1985 Trek 420 today (taupe w/red) for $100. 22.5" model, all original (except for handlebar tape) with Shimano Z-series, Dia-Compe brakes and Sakae crank and very few minor paint dings. Only rust appears to be on the toe clips and the tires do need to be replaced. Shifts smooth and rides great. Seeing as I am just getting started with a road bike, was this a better choice than getting a *mart bike? Should I upgrade components?

Almost anything is better than a "mart" bike. As for upgrading components, if what you have is working fine, I see no reason to upgrade. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. Sounds like a good deal too. A much better bike and cheaper than a "mart" bike. Can't go wrong there.
I picked up a 420 not long ago but it was too small for me. It was a nice ride and with the triple up front I am sure it will be a great touring bike for the guy it went to.
Here's a pic and it sounds like the same color scheme as yours, also a 1985. Here in SoCal a 420 in very good shape for $100 would be a bargain.

A Trek 420 of that era in good shape is worth over $100 in virtually any part of the country.
You got yourself a bike worth riding as long as it is in the right size range for you. If not, trading it for one of similar quality/condition would definitely be worth the effort to get you a good daily rider!
In totally refurbished, ready to ride, super clean condition, your Trek would be worth around $225, maybe even a little more around here. Vintage steel Treks are getting really hot.
As far as comparison to an Xmart bike, you need to try to work on one sometime. I find it very frustrating and no longer work on them, even for friends.
