Clydesdales/Athenas (200+ lb / 91+ kg) - I Am Overweight

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I hadn't done the BMI calculator in a while, but regardless of how accurate it may or may not be, it is classifying me as overweight now instead of obese.
Of course, as fun as this is for me to joke about, I still hate the BMI scale. I am supposed to be down to 178 pounds just to enter the high end of normal. That does not seem realistic at all, and my physican who has been a part of all this weight loss agrees. Getting to the middle of the healthy range would almost certainly not be healthy for me.
Time will tell I suppose. I still don't know how much more I want to lose, but I have always told myself I would know when I got there. I still have a bit of a belly going on so I know I am not there yet. Oddly enough, I am below the weight I thought I would be stopping at, the weight where I used to be healthy and buff, but that was a couple decades ago and apparently on a frame that had a lot more muscle ;)
So far I am down 100 pounds from December of 2007. That kind of statistic is both thrilling and frightening. It is nice knowing that after losing that much I am certainly capable of losing what is still remaining. It is also a bit spooky knowing that not only did I previously lug around enough extra mass to make more than my 7 year old son, but that even after losing that much I still have a significant amount left to go. I don't even qualify for emeritus status yet!
We now return to our regularly scheduled programming.

My doc isn't a big fan of the BMI scale either. I figure I'm never going ot use it ever again, but like you, know when I get to where I need to be.
Congratulations on an impressive effort and results do far! Slow and steady wins the day, everytime.

Not a fan of BMI myself. I mean really, a 6'3" guy is normally 200lbs or less? I'd look like a stick. I'd have no mass, I'd blow away in the wind, I'd freeze when it was 70 degrees out. Well you get the idea. When I get to 220 I'll consider myself normal
I'm not overweight....I'm undertall.
I really should be 7 of 8 ft tall.............um.......really...........
OK OK I'm overweight too.

My doctor hates the BMI too. BMI says I need to lose about 110 pounds. Doctor says anything more than losing about 40 pounds would not be great for me.

Yeah I'm not a fan of such a totally generic scale either. According to this stupid measurement, if I weighed 123 pounds I would still be in the low end of normal.
Of course I would also be dead. So there's that.
I will know I'm at the right weight when women begin to throw themselves at me uncontrollably and men all offer to be my best friend and give me money for wild, clearly ridiculous business plans. I will then turn that charisma to world domination and become Supreme Dictator for Life. My first ruling, after abolishing the BMI scale, will be free bicycles for every fat person on the planet. You skinny sonsab!#^&es will have to fend for yourselves. :)
BMI is perpetuated by the life/medical insurance companies to provide them with an excuse to not cover otherwise healthy people.
That's what the voices are telling me anyway.
I''m a fat guy, granted, but my cholesterol is 145, bp 120/70, and have a resting heart rate of 65. Can't buy life insurance though...because I'm too fat. (grr)

I just went to the doctor too. My first physical in 5 years. My bad cholesterol is 188, bp 130/70, glucose is 105. I'm pretty active and food is my weakness. I eat small portions of the food I like. I tried the other extreme and I was hungry all the time. So I decided that this isn't working and just eat smaller portions. I do eat a lot of fruit and vegetables I guess as we get older our matabolism just slows enough to punish us. That is why being more active as we get older is needed.
I'm with you if I was to get to my BMI I would be a tall stick too. Right now I weigh 265 and I'm over 6'2". I would like to get down to 245. My doctor says I should be down 30-40lbs from my present weight. I'm just a big guy. I don't look fat I'm just big. I know if I were to loose 20lbs those hills would be a lot easier.
I was able to get term life insurance. If I was just the hint of unhealthy I know I wouldn't have got it so easily.

Not true. I'm 6'5" and for the past 2 years I have been 200, recently worked down to 185. I am most definitely no stick. I was 220 before I began working out and that was when you could see fat cheeks, a fat butt, a tummy etc. At 185 I have legs thicker than all "normal" weight people I know and a beefier upper body.
Have a female friend that is huge into Tri's, she is barely 5'1, has more muscle than most guys, weighs in at 131 +/-, but looks a lot smaller. She recently did a double century, ran 120 miles across some African desert thing and missed qualifying for the Hawaiian Iron Man race by 2 seconds. Her BMI score says she is obese. That is what wrong with the BMI. It does not account for muscle build, but like others have said, the insurance companies live an die by this thing.

keep in mind we don't just want to drop "weight" we want to gain muscle. dietng alone is not good enough, we must all do some weight training.

Congrats on the weight loss. I've lost over 100 pounds too. Life is way better. Currently nudging toward 200, I really hope to get into the ones by July 4. My best regular weight is 175-185. Below 170, I look a little undernourished, the BMI calculator saying my lower normal limit is 145 is a total crock.
Anyway, I'm going down to 185, see how it works, and decide where to go from there. I'm looking forward to being able to glycogen-load and ride faster, instead fasting to force fat to burn off, which works to shed pounds, currently about 2 per week, but makes me slow. Also being able to enjoy some hearty meals instead of calorie-counting.
