Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - First build: Peugeot

I'm starting my first build after picking up a frame this weekend. I finally found a used frame thats big enough for my ogerish height, the only issue is that its a stripped down Peugeot that I was told has english threads on it. I've been finding it pretty difficult to actually track down any info on this frame and was wondering if some one might be able to help me. The serial number is Y803 02541.

The bottom bracket is currently set for cottered cranks, being that I'm going to need to build the entire bike, would you suggest getting a newer bottom bracket? If so what should I look for as I hit up part racks and used bins at my LBS's?

You don't want to buy a used BB. A brand new one is like $25 (http://www.pricepoint.com/detail/16721-030_IROBB7-3-Parts-664-Single-Speed-Parts/IRO-Square-Taper-Bottom-Bracket.htm).

don't be surprised if it's french threaded and you can't find anything to fit.

Any idea what the model is? Take the make and model to the vintage forum, they could probably give you a more definite answer than this end of the board.

From the links you provided looks like you were right on the money with the '78 guess. Should make this an interesting build...

EDIT: Forgot to mention...Thanks for the help guys!, that velo-orange BB just might keep from returning the frame. Either way its better than the '77 Schwinn Varsity I've been riding.

Old Peugeot's are very cool. I've owned quite a few. It's a great way to get a lightweight bike at an affordable price. Those old Reynolds 531 and Super Vitus 980 bikes are the cat's pajamas :thumb:

I'll make sure that I post a pic when its finished for you enjoyment. Going to take it to the LBS tonight to get the threads measured...then its down to just picking out parts and putting it together.

Some old Peugeots are great frames, many are not. Based on the cottered cranks, this is almost certainly old enough to have french threading. If it's a good frame, get the VO bb. If it's a junker, either see if you can find an appropriately sized spindle at the lbs and use the existing bb cups, or go find another frame. If this is a lower end model, I'd think twice about building it up -- I wouldn't deal with the headache of french sizing (it doesn't end at the bb!) unless the frame is worth the effort. Post a pic in the classic and vintage forum and you'll likely get quick feedback about the frame.

Took it to the shop last night and I lucked out, it is an English threaded frame. The frames in really good shape, looks like the guy I bought it from probably just had it hanging in his garage. I'll get some pics up later when I get done with work.

British threading and cottered cranks on a Peugeot? That's a new one on me. Maybe the frame was modified? I'm eager to see photos.

Anyways I'm looking at cranks right now.
Found a pretty good deal on SRAM S300 on ebay, the also have the SRAM S100. Both come with bottom brackets. The price differences is about $25. Anyone know anything about the S100? From what I've read the S300 is very nice, but I would like to save a little cash if the difference is minor between these too...
