Mountain Biking - Building a trail
Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I have decided that I want to build a trail (or series of) on my property. I live on 285 mostly wooded acres in middle GA. How hard is it to build a trail completely from scratch? I've got access to all the tools I might need (at least I'm fairly sure I do, I live on what used to be a working farm a long time ago) so it's just a matter of planning and building. Is this something I could do on my own? Thanks for the help in advance!

It takes a lot of man hours for the most part. Do you have a McLeod? A Pulaski? While it's not rocket science, there are some good techniques you might want to read up on. IMBA has a good book http://www.imba.com/resources/trail_building/trail_solutions.html as well as a lot of good info on their site...

How's your progress?

we used to clear ATV trails with nothing but hatchets, machetes, hand saws, and clubs (just a thick, green tree branch used to knock down all of the dead branches in the way). having to go around stuff is part of the fun! also, having to go OVER stuff is also fun. we would make "whoop" sections using 12" logs about 3 feet apart. it made the straight, clear sections more interesting.
as far as doing it yourself... just invite some of your buddies over with the promise of letting them ride it when you guys get it done. i would help if someone asked me.
