Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Ok, so I think I sustained permanent damage to my back by lifting Schwinn Varsitys onto our storage hooks and repair stands. And the fact that they didn't have functioning derailleurs and had steel rims in combination with their vastly over-weight frame has left me wanting to take a sledgehammer to everyone I see.
That being said, I go into the bike shop and they are stripping one down to get the headset off of it to put it on ebay. The rest is going to the scrapyard. I thought there were people that liked these things, am I right? Is it worth grabbing any of the rest of the bike?

Yeah, some of the schwinn approved parts are being sought out. Not that any of the parts are extremely valuable, but some of the Schwinn collectors want everything stock clear down to the reflectors. There is a classifieds section in the Schwinn.com forums, you will probably find someone interested. (I might be too)

Any adult bicycle in good mechanical order is of value to someone who needs cheap transportation. I took an old Varsity that was not particularly pretty and made a cheap single speed out of it. I removed the shifters, derailluers, big chainring, bashguard, ground off the kickstand, shortened the chain and picked a gear, installed new tubes and tires and regreased the cupped bottom bracket. I had to post on CL 3-4 times due to the fact that I am more than a few steps outside the city, but each time I had 10-12 hits.

Take the rest and donate it to your local bike co-op
+1 Take the carcass and donate it to your local co-op. Or if you have the parts to finish one, grab the best one paint wise in your size and have some fun rebuilding it.
