Isn't it the quads which get big instead by powerful riding?
the hams get big by doing leg curls.....

Spinning in circles, thus lifting my leg up during the back of the pedal stroke, has added to my hamstring mass.

is it bad to have too much muscle mass then? does it slow you down?

My husband has been riding 100-150 miles per week almost year round for a couple of years now. At first his quads got somewhat bigger but now his hamstrings have gotten bigger too. He looks very balanced fore and aft. Nice legs.
If your hamstrings are bigger than you quads, I would say that I would really like to see you riding--maybe you've got an unusual way to pedal?
If they seem way too big, maybe you need to pedal a higher cadence, maybe you're mashing too much?

I agree with foehn. I remember cycle rickshaws in India (single speed tricycles used to carry passengers), and the drivers almost always had skinny legs with large hamstrings. Those rickshaws were unbelievably hard to get moving when you had a couple of people in the back and the drivers had to do mash away for all they were worth.
