Last week end I took part in the first Rennes-Brest-Rennes 600 brevet. The route was pretty much that of PBP, except on the way out between Sizun in Brest (a bit longer than the PBP route in order to make it a 600). About 280 cyclists came, which is huge for a non-PBP year! The checkpoints were the same as on PBP (Tinteniac, Loudeac, Carhaix, Brest). Unlike in 2007, the weather was perfect: no rain, no wind, not too hot, not too cold. It was nice to see a lot of places in the daylight (including Loudeac). Overall it was a lot of fun. I rode to Brest in about 15h30, then stopped for 6 hours in Brest to eat and sleep, and rode back in about 16 hours. The atmosphere was great, lots of friends and lots of happy people at the finish. The fastest rider was Hervé Le Du riding a recumbent who finished just over 19 hours! The climbing didn't seem as bad as on PBP, probably because we hadn't been riding from Paris...

I enjoyed your report.

Do you think that riders in France riding more brevets because of the up coming rule changes regarding entry to Paris-Brest-Paris?

I think it would be very difficult for the U.S. to match the increase in brevets that some of the other countries will be able to put out. We here in the U.S. will really have to make an effort just to not drop significantly in our entry numbers.

Wow, 280 cyclists on a 600?

Sounds awesome.

Thanks for the report.
