I've gotten the 2009 model OnGuard Brute STD 5001 U-Lock, after much debate as to whether I ought to opt for it or for the Kryptonite New York U-Lock STD. So far (no theft yet...:)), I'm pleased with it. It was rather cheaper than the Kryptonite, and feels about as heavy (maybe slightly more so), and it comes with five keys (four regular + 1 lighted), whereas Kryptonite gives you three (two regular + one lighted). There's no option for warranty in New York State with the OnGuard, but, then, I find this sort of "anti-theft protection" to be a bit of a sham, anyway (fingers: crossed).
Does anyone else have any thoughts on the lock?
I've got the Onguard Mini. Also came with five keys. Lost one so far. Still have bikes.

Good protection for the money. I have several OnGuard products, all of good quality.
I have an earlier model OnGuard Brute, and it's served me well so far. Eventually, if the locking mechanism starts to stick a bit, a drop of oil on the locking piece (that goes into the shackle's groove) works wonders.

Is it all right for there to be a bit of "play" when one shakes the shackle around in its position in the locking-bar?

Provided that the shackle is securely attached to the locking bar, meaning that no reasonable jerk can separate the two, a bit of play is no big deal.

Thanks. I've compared with the Kryptonite New York STD U-Lock, and the OnGuard Brute does have more play. That said, as long as security isn't adversely affected, I suppose I don't care.
