The radio ban is a good thing, but why mess with things in the middle of the race?

The directeurs are not riding the bikes-the riders' instincts and tactical talent has to be left to them.......

I am not seeing much comment on the subject...

Experiments? The race was held for 90 years without radios. ???

And not a one of these guys (except maybe big george?) has raced in one without them.

People with a whole lot more expertise than us have placed much of the blame on the endless formulaic stages, where riders are caught with one K to go, on radios.

People with more experience than us said analogous things about derailleurs.

This whole twitter thing makes the riders all sound like 14 year old girls.

LOL!!! :lol::roflmao2:

It does! But, at least it's direct from the riders vs. velonews/cyclingnews/etcnews and immediate. What I do find interesting is how quickly they are to twitter after a race. Some times it's within minutes! Like they are thinking about it on the last km, hop off the bike and twitter away!

lol!

But, like I said in the stage 11 thread, I wonder if there will be some anti-protesting tomorrow to show "how much better" the races are with radios....

Personally, with how conservative cycling can be, I'm surprised they were ever allowed. I'd love to read & hear all the commentary when they were first allowed.

LOL seriously? I mean, maybe this is the one thing that was certain to happen with no radios.

From the video

"we are in a hotel room, MY hotel room....." Ok, we get it, its all about you Lance

"this is not the time to be humble, you're on LIVESTRONG.com" not everyone is as pompous as you. Lance in these videos reminds me of the obnoxious loud friend at the bar talking over everyone else trying to be in the spot light while everyone else is just like, wow

"Other riders were *****ing and whining that you were winning too much" - funny how he *****ed and whined about Contador.....

"Typical first week Tour stuff, nothing to talk about....."
Yea, other than sprint stages and seeing some of the best sprints in the world. I guess other peoples life time dream to win a stage means nothing.

Maybe it's just me, but I'm finding the racing somewhat boring so far. Racing might be too strong a word. The TT's were good, but the rest seems like fast touring.

The UCI is experimenting with trying to get the proverbial genie back in the bottle. Good luck with that. If they didn't want radios, they should have stopped it with Motorolla years ago.

This WAS an experiment . . . and a bad one at that. The TDF is no place to be trying this stuff . . the Pro Tour calendar is filled with stage races all year long they can play their games with.

There is no best racing scenerio though. Weather they have radios or not . . it's all relative. Riders and fans adapt to whatever is presented. So, this little experiment today was really an exercise in how to waffle.

Have you ever heard the saying ...... "crap, or get off the pot?" Make a decision one way or the other.:thumb:

Oh & hey.... Another Howzit post stating how Lance Armstrong is the greatest thing since sliced bread. Dang dood. You ever going to get off your Lance loving saddle and join the real world? Perhaps just admiring him from the sidelines may be a better road to take than stating your love at every turn.

Oh well. Hero worship will eventually lead to heartbreak. Be carefull sonny.

We get it. You hate Lance. You do realize that is his website, thought, right? I mean, if I really hate someone, I don't follow everything they do. I don't get onto their website and watch their videos. I'm starting to wonder if you are gonna sneak into his house to find something wrong with him, or look through his garbage.

I'll see if I can lay this out for you. Right now, the biggest event in cycling is happening. These threads are about that, and typically, during this time of year, this whole subforum is about the Tour. You wouldn't go onto a soccer forum, into the professional soccer subforum, during the World Cup, and not expect to hear about anything other than the World Cup.

Second, the rider with the most Tour wins under his belt and who retired has come back this year. If Lance was some no name rider, then it would be weird to be hearing all about the drama surrounding him, but Lance has won more Tours than anyone in the sport. Of course people are going to talk about him and discuss his strategies. It's only natural.

Third. Just shut the **** up. I don't know who's more annoying; Lance fanboys or you. I don't know if Lance ran over your dog or what, but you need to get over this. As long as he's still one of the biggest names in cycling, people who follow cycling will be talking about him and be interested in him.

This morning on the pre-race show, Paul said that back when Motorola first brought out the radios, that Bob Roll would change the channel and listen to music :D.

I suppose the DS could make them all wear iPods and put some really fast-tempo music on the things..

As far as the safety concern, really, I think the race organizers should improve that. I do like racers being racers and not being tools for some coach somewhere. If I wanted that, I'd watch some other team sport.

The race organizers should be rounded up, taken behind the barn, and shot. The finishes to these clear sprint stages look more like go-kart tracks than sprinting alleys.

Imagine Cavendish bombing his way through this:

Riders have been known to remove the earpiece when fed up. They can claim 'techincal difficulties' too, and turn the volume off.

It would never happen. How do you keep people from breaking away other than picking up the pace in the peloton? If the peloton stuck to 15mph, a breakaway could gain huge chunks of time and kill the chances of all of the GC contenders in the peloton..

I suppose they could take a nature break at the finish line as a means of protest :D.

Have you watched the Tour de France before?

IMHO, the first week of the Tour was above average for first weeks on the excitement meter. You had a TTT that made a difference (unlike previous recent tours with no TTT, or limited time loss formulas.)

You had favorites losing time, caught out of the lead echelon in a corss wind.

You had an early break succeed.

You had the fastest sprinte in the world demonstrating that.

You had two stages end with 2 up sprints that were classic tactical battles.

You had Contador launch an attack that was so explosive he had to slow to make the next corner climbing an HC climb.

Now, admittedly there could have been more fireworks in the Pyranees with an epic stage with a mountaintop finish, but the Organizer's purposefully back end loaded this year's tour.

And as for having a boring stage yesterday, its difficult to isolate the affect of radio's or their absence on yesterday's racing.

A day after a rest day, with a profile that almost destined to end in a sprint finish, and a breakaway on Bastille day with 3 French riders in it. Did anyone expect yesterday to be much different than it ended up.

There was a break with some French riders in it. The peleton rode just fast enough to catch them. Cavendish won the sprint.

It did not take a rocket scientist to predict this exact result, with or without radios.

Just like in last years Tour of California- they give Levi a break on his screw-up.

The Tour de France race jury took the decision on Wednesday morning to cancel the 15 second deficit that had opened in the peloton in the final kilometres of stage 10 to Issoudun.

Levi Leipheimer (Astana) and Bradley Wiggins (Garmin-Slipstream) had found themselves caught in the second group yesterday. However, today's decision to nullify the time gap returns the riders to 4th and 5th on general classification, respectively.

I think they didn't want chaos with the GC contenders trying to mix it up with the sprinters to avoid a time gap. There was no reason for a GC change yesterday, as it was a standard sprint stage finish. I don't think this was because it was Levi, per se.
