has anyone else removed the front der. and installed a spot blower drive to lx cranks with a 34t chain ring for commutes? leave rear der. as is .

I've heard of messengers doing that. I thought of getting a larger ring for the front but not removing the others. I'd be doomed in winter without those extra gears. I'm thinking I might just get a road bike for the spring. MTB's are just too slow when left as it.
Is there a benefit to removing the front derailer other than a weight benefit?

Well, Zed, believe it or not(and I don't know how familiar you are with any major cities) but New York City had, as far as I know, only (did he say "ONLY"?!?!) 7 fatalities last year from spring through fall.
Now, the word "fatality" is probably enough to make anyone's eyes bulge, let alone 7 of them...however, when one considers the amount of people and vehicles that cruise the city streets in an hour let alone throughout a "normal?" season...(sorry guys, I know better than to use that word in here but y'all get my drift)that ain't bad...could be/should be much better I realize, but we're far from being in the safety-conscious world which we'd all like to think of as the norm.
To make a really long story short, yes, there are friend-lier towns out there. Friendly?...who knows, but maybe someday.
Frisco's a pretty friendly town from what I've heard as well.
From what I've seen and from what I've been told, the more cyclists there are in an area, the more aware (generally) the motorists are. It just so happens that big cities have more people, therefore more cyclists, therefore...well, you get my point.
Are big cities safe? Not necessarily, but there is safety in numbers. So call out your buddies. Get 'em out there. Show those mean old motortypes that if they're gonna run you down, they'll have to take out your buddies too.
