On another note, I have been astounded by is the way nearly all the US based cycling media was buying the conjecture that Kloden would have won the stage if he hadn't popped off. That's assuming quite a lot, IMO. If AC hadn't accelerated, it's almost certain the Schlecks would have given it one more run
I dont agree with this. I think the Schlecks were done attacking. They had expeded a tremendous amout of effort that day and hadnt dropped Contador the man they wanted to drop. I think the looks on their faces said well we gave it everything and hes still here so lets just ride the wheels and see what happens at the line. Contador still had Kloden so it was a 2 on 2 battle. Its 2km to the top, Kloden sucks the wheels, recovers on the down hill and has a chance at the line...thats how i see it without the acceleration.
