Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - Best tire for your buck!?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
So, I'm on the look out for a good affordable tire. Possibly with Kevlar components. I've heard some good things about the Ultra Gator Skins by Continental. Anyone have any input on those or something better?
Thanks a bunch,
Ericson Calderon
Also, how much do tubes make a difference when it comes to reliability, performance, and other issues like that?

I got a whole bunch of Michelin Dynamic tires for $8 a piece. Pretty good for that price.
It just depends what kind of deal you can find out there.

Michelin Krylion Carbon. Good mix of low rolling resistance and puncture resistance.

I want to try Krylions as well.
My girlfriend just got some Grand Prix 4000 s tires and they are great. I, personally, will only run gatorskins. Right now, you can get them at PBK for $24. I'm pretty sure that will be the best bang for your buck as far as tires go. Decently well performing, no flats, and long lasting. And they look cool.
I thought abuot trying everwears but then realized they weren't for me. Just too low performing for my taste. The thought of being able to skid a lot on a tire is cool, but then I realized the downside: the tire will square up just like any other tire will. I hate riding on tires that are completely squared up, so I would probably throw away the everwear before I even had a chance to completely skid through it.

Maxxis Refuse. 9 months, no flats, on the second rear tire after about 6 months on the first one and I ride brakeless and do skip and skid a decent amount (though certainly nothing like people who do it for tricks or as their only method of slowing down).

The best value tyre is..... a free one!
Go dumpster dive behind bike shops until you get a bunch. Most aren't used too much and still have lots of life in them. Then skid to your hearts content and change them up regularly. We used to do that as kids, no reason to stop now.

this is best tire for your buck thread.
krylion carbons got way too expensive in the last year.
I began using Gator Skins the first of the year. They are paying for themselves, no flats so far. (+200 miles a month) I used Michelin Krylion before that. I think the Gators roll better, at least for me. I was getting 1 flat a month on the Michelins.

I got some from performance last month when they had the buy 2 tires and get 10% off and used a 10% code also and they came out to $29 and some change a tire.
I just looked at their site and its $49.00 a tire now:eek:
I guess you're right, they really jacked the price on those. PBK still has them, $35, a reasonable price for krylions with free shipping.

I don't think they're that bad. At least not the folding 23c ones. I will put on my Vittoria evo corsa CX tires for races, though.
PBK= probikekit.co.uk---a British site that does free shipping to the US. Cheapest gatorskins in the world

Although they're pricier, I have to give another vote for Krylions.
I live in Detroit proper, and this is one of the few tires that regularly handles what these mean streets can dish out. You name it, and if it's sharp and pointy, I've probably run it over. They come in colors as well, which is fun.
My second runner up are Vittoria Randonneurs. Heavier, and riding a little bit more like a tank, these tires are very durable. My g/f has them, and I run them on my ss/fg (the Krylions are on my roadie). They're not the fastest tires but they are very dependable.

I ride a Conti 4 Seasons in front and a Conti Gatorskin in back.
Not cheap, but, in my humble opinion, the most tire for the money.
I've NEVER had a flat with these tires, and I get 3000 miles out of them.
I also like Schwalbe Ultremos, with which I've not had a flat, but the rear tire tends to get cut and I wind up changing it early because I worry about the cuts (I've not had any cuts on the front tire).
The new Ultremo DD due in August supposedly resists cuts better than the present Ultremo.
Anyway, I look at the price of tires in terms of miles per dollar; and appointments kept and getting to work on time because of no flats.

I have spent alot of years riding armadillos, and recently have been riding the Kenda's that came with my KiloTT... I have been digging it because they are a little "softer" , where the armadillos were F'ING HARD...
Are gatorskins and the Krylions and other Kevlar tires hard like that? I really dont want to go back. It was like having those non pneumatic rock-hard tricycle tires on there...
I have no idea -- find out what the TPI is of each tire. The higher the TPI, the better they feel (generally speaking).

Actually, I'm on a set of DDs' on the road bike. Expensive but they are REALLY nice feeling and so far no flats. I've done two nasty Centuries and commuted on them for the last week. VERY nice. I'll learn to poop money to keep these on a bike.
They do show cuts tho and it is a bit creepy. We will see....
I enjoy pasela tourguards and GP4000S.
ARgh, all the 25's are sold out! Is a 25 noticeably wider than a 23?
Oh, and what about tubes!?
And, are you buying the gator skins at $25 a tire or $25 for a set (2 tires)?
i got 5 lightly used gatorskins at a local garage sale for 12 dollars for all! and a free armadillo....they are 28c, but its better than paying 20+ dollars on 1 tire
So, 23 or 25 what do you peeps recommend?

Does a 25 make that big of a difference? What about 23/25 f/r ratio?
Has anyone ordered from Probikekit.com? Do they charge shipping to the US?
if your frame can fit 25s, get 25s.
and dude -- you should search the forums or google instead of asking every single question that pops into your head. all of your questions have been answered. and you can easily see the PBK shipping policies if you just look at their website. sheldon brown addresses the different tire size thing and there are a million reviews of PBK on this website.

I was pretty indecisive about tires but decided to go with Krylions. I got them for 35$ each shipped from treefortbikes.com. A little bit pricey, but I haven't had any problems w/ them yet.
