I live in Kenmore Square and commute to Norwood, about half-way to Attleboro, and also do training rides all over the metropolitan area. In fact I rode through Woburn just yesterday from Boston. When I'm planning a route, my best resource is the AAA map of Metropolitan Boston. The scale is detailed enough to show a lot of back roads, but covers a wide area. It includes Woburn and goes at least as far south as Wrentham if not Attleboro (I don't have my copy handy). My main problem with back roads though is it's easy to get lost given the vagaries of local roads and signage.

I think you have to decide what kind of riding you want to do and when you want to do it to select the best of numerous routes. From Boston, Rte 1A is a direct route to Attleboro, and is not too bad if you are comfortable in traffic. If distance is of less concern and you want to avoid Boston on real backroads, you could figure out roundabout routes further west, e.g. through Lexington, Waltham, Needham, Dover, Medfield, Norfolk, etc. Of course virtually any route on a very early weekend morning is the best; I went through Woburn at about 6:30 AM on Saturday. :D

I live in North Attleboro.

1A would probably be the best way from Norwood, but it doesn't go directly to Attleboro, it joins with Route 1 in Plainville, and than splits off again in South Attleboro. You could also take route 1 from Norwood, I know someone who has riden that route with traffic, but I wouldn't go that way unless my life depended on it.

I ride 1A from Wrentham center to where it joins route 1 in Plainville all the time, it's a pretty leisurely ride. There are a couple of spots that are tight, but for the most part you'd have plenty of room to ride.

There is one section of 1A in Norfolk that's a little spooky because it's where the state prison access area is located. No stopping and don't be picking up strangers!:)

I ride all over the area, including into franklin, wrentham, foxboro, and sharon, if you're going someplace specific in Attleboro, PM me the street name and I can give you a good route off of 1A.
