Anyone know of a retailer in Toronto that carries the Hozan Lock Ring Pliers for removing the lock ring on older bottom brackets? I went to four different shops yesterday, they didn't carry ANY lock ring tools at all.

With that you're less likely to chew up the outside of the cup. They're like $30-35 from various places on the 'net.

My advice is to buy a double ended hook spanner. Pliers work well if the slots are 180 degrees apart. They dont work so well if a lock ring has 3 or 6 slots.

I've been very happy with mine...

Yep - I use the Hozan double-spanners, too. Bought 'em back in 1984. Cost me around $14.

I have this one, too, and love it. I got mine from Harris Cyclery--they machine the inside of the hooks smooth for a better grip.

Right, I read that they are prone to slippage - that's why I thought the plier was better. I suppose I'll look for the simple spanner. Need to get these projects finished!

That tool is primarily meant as a headset pliers, although it will work to some degree on bb lock rings. I have one, but for bb lock rings, I prefer the Stein lockring pliers. It's basically a modified vise grip.
Any bike shop can order the tool directly from Stein or through United Bicycle Supply. They are also a source for the Hozan tool.

I like the VAR lockring pliers. I suppose they won't work well on a three notch lockring, but I've never encountered one.

seems like park used to sell a lock ring plier. I really liked using them for the security. All I have now is a spanner, it works ok, but you have to be careful. I can't believe two of you have spanner pics ready to post.
