I have a rear derailleur that looks like someone took it completly apart. I'm trying to reassemble and get the plate over in the proper position under the load of the spring. It's a pain in the butt. Anyone have any tips for getting it over and it not exploding into my face?
I was was able to get a vise grip around it and actually get it to the correct position but was not able to clamp it down and slip in the c-clip.

Heh. I've had to do this.
You need a bench vise to help you out. Wind the plate with the vise-grips, then carefully put the whole pivot assembly between the jaws of the bench vise and wind it closed with your free hand. Isn't easy. Get that clip in there quick and careful.
