Just picked up a NOS 2007 Unit 2-9 and boy howdy do I like those 29 inch wheels. They making rolling over things a breeze. Anyways I must have come down on a rock pretty hard a few days ago, but the dustcap from the bottom bracket/cranks popped off and is nowhere to be found.

This is the first time I've seen a hollow bottom bracket; it's an FSA MegaEXO bb with an FSA V-Drive crankset. Is the dustcap necessary for anything besides keeping gunk out of the hollows? Should I get a new one? My LBS didn't have one in stock so what should I do?

Thanks in advance.

I think FSA uses a similar design as Shimano, in which case it's not a dust cap but a preload "bolt", needed when installing the cranks. There was only one on the non-drive side?

If what bikinfool proves to be correct, I'd suggest a call to the manufacturer. Check on the web for the correct number, and ask them about a replacement. When you have one - be sure to follow the directions for installing the until correctly. Whoever installed this FSA MegaEXPO pre-loading bolt obviously didn't bother to - otherwise it wouldn't have popped off. I'd assume all his work was this good and reinstall the whole thing beginning to end.

I'd be curious what sort of tool is used to install this part?

Okay now I was curious so looked it up on the FSA website and it didn't specify what to tighten the adjusting cap with, but the parktool page says it uses an 8mm hex...http://www.parktool.com/repair/printhowto.asp?id=95

The one that is "missing" is on the drive side. I'm trying to remember if it was even there in the first place. From the parktool link you posted, it looks like there is only one for the non-drive side in installation like bikinfool had said. Guess I'm just used to seeing a non-hollow BB...

I guess I just got nervous around my new baby. Thanks for the input, it's much appreciated.

Find the FSA website and find the Tech Docs - or equivalent - and check everything. Then do it again.

Checked over everything according to http://mtb.fullspeedahead.com/downloadfly.aspx?download=downloads/Install_MegaExoAlloy.pdf and she still works just fine. Just my ineptitude with my new bike. Thanks again

It's the easiest kind of problem to solve...the non-existent one! Funny how your mind can remember things about something older like your old crank and transfer them to something newer...
